Next season I fancy taking my Tenkara rod up into the hills of North Wales in search of some wild Stillwater brownies. I don't have any particular locations in mind - this is just an idea in it's early stages. Does anyone have any experience/suggestions or does anybody want to get involved?

Bit south of your preferred zone but Teifi Pools are well known. They are controlled by Tregaron AA. Near Dolgellau (above Arthog) are Cregennan (or Cregennen according to Google Maps) Lakes.
All these are claimed to have WBT. I have never fished them, but I used to live near both these places at one time or another and they are beautiful spots to visit.

Both myself and Roger Smith plus one or two other fishing friends have 'done' some of the mountain llyns but not used Tenkara as yet. We would certainly be interested in joining forces. Roger has a great knowledge of the various ranges in North Wales and is an experienced walker/climber. Keep us posted please on developments for 2014. I am sure that there will be lots of choices in terms of locality. Tight lines Glyn

Coch y Bontddu Books of Machynlleth have a book on flies used in the lakes around Blaenau Ffestiniog. It may have useful info about the various lakes in the area. PLU STINIOG: TROUT FLIES FOR NORTH WALES. Author: Evans (Emrys). Book Code: 24628 ISBN: 9781904784289 Price: £19.95 I'm not sure if the link will work, but here it is! www.anglebooks.com/product.php/26860/plu-stiniog--trout-flies-for-north-wales-

I fish for wild brownies at a place called Rosebush in the Preseli hills south west Wales. It's deadly for wild brownies one of the locals who fishes there saw me catching them on the T-rod he bought himself an ESO rod and he now uses nothing else. I also fish the tarns in the lake district and it works really well there too. As for flies size 14 & 16 kebaris or stewarts black spiders. Wild brownies seem to be really close to the edge on most places I've tried tenkara is ideal. The other big bonus if your fishing in the hills the rod will fit in a back pack.

Many thanks for the replies. I will certainly arrange something for next year - probably around June. I have in mind something a little off the beaten track so a bit of a walk may be involved, maybe even an overnight camp! Anybody who may be interested in joining me let me know. Flats ghost, I will keep you posted.

Another link for you - Jon Beer did an article in Trout & Salmon on the club so it could be an idea to sift through old issues for some ideas . www.pysgotaogwenfishing.org/

While refreshing my memory of Cregennan lakes, I noticed a Google books reference to a book by a man called Jonah Jones, The Lakes of North Wales. I checked it out later. It is really a walkers' guide, but it appears to have comprehensive listings, hand-drawn maps and details on how to reach the most remote lakes. The publishers are at this website: www.ylolfa.com/en/dangos.php?ISBN=0862436265

This looks good - the fishing reports read very well. Got to be worth a try.
