Sounds like a great adventure. Look forward to your reports. I have a similar plan for the Lake District tarns in 2014. My girlfriend's father lives on the edge of Ullswater, so lots to go at, Angle Tarn and Blind Tarn spring to mind.
Tight lines and happy tenkara
Phil

I was walking along Brothers Water about 3 years ago and I saw a bloke pull out a trout on worming gear about 1 1/2 lb. I also had a look where the river runs in at the Kirkstone end and there were some good trout rising. Still haven't fished it. I need a holiday up there on my own just fishing.

Never had a chuck in Brothers Water, heard good things about it. The beck that runs down from Kirkstone Pass looks ideal for tenkara. Not sure of the permissions around there though. Like you say, need to explore and test the waters. Cheers Phil

Thanks for that Adric it's a good web site. It doesn't give Brotherswater much of a write-up. Looks like private land where the river runs in.
A lovely little tarn at the foot of Kirkstone Pass but not of any great angling interest. It does hold trout, small ones, and a few perch and eels but much of the shore is within an SSSI and access is restricted to the wooded western shore. Have a go if you must but probably better to leave this one to the wildlife.

Many thanks for the replies. I will certainly arrange something for next year - probably around June. I have in mind something a little off the beaten track so a bit of a walk may be involved, maybe even an overnight camp! Anybody who may be interested in joining me let me know. Flats ghost, I will keep you posted. Would you count me in please? I'm itching to get up to the Llyns after reading Ian Niall's 'Trout from the Hills'.

Ian Nialls book is fantastic - my inspiration also. I have always wanted to follow in his footsteps.

Ian Niall's greatest triumph is I think 'The Wigtown Ploughman'. published under his real name, John Mcneillie, in 1939. It's a wonderful compelling read.
Last June I took the fairly arduous walk from Hartsop up to Hayeswater, where I just about managed to flog out a heavyish tenkara line across the gale. I caught one lovely heavily spotted eleven inch trout, and hooked two others which felt a similar size, but they both came unstuck.
I have a little book called 'The Lake District Anglers' Guide' by Laurence Tetley. He has a very good opinion of Brothers Water, there's a photo' of him fishing it from an open gravel and boulder bank, on the front cover. Also apparently there is free fishing on the nearby Goldrill, Grisedale, Deepdale and Hartsop Becks.
Chris.

I have fished Goldrill Beck, my girlfriend's father lives very close to it toward the Ullswater end. Some lovely fish to be had. I haven't fished the other becks although I have given them some consideration. Cheers Phil

Look out for next month's Fly Fishing and Fly Tying. There's an article entitled 'Tenkara Heads for the Hills'. If you have a copy of this month's issue, there is an amazing photo of some lucky individual fishing T. at the tail of a pool, just before the water disappears off the edge of the rocks he's stood on (p. 72).

Dyfan I have seen the photo - it should be an interesting article - hopefully it will provide some useful advice. I seem to recall that FF&FT were possibly the first UK publication (as far as I am aware), to run a Tenkara piece some years ago.

I recently re-read Dave Southall's excellent Jan 12 (Eastern Promise) article, which refers to another article from early 2010 (both FF & FT), so could well be. There are some interesting points and tips about winter nymph/bug fishing in Dave's piece, by the way.

Feb 2010 was the issue - an article by Axel Wessolowski, although it features some very untypical Tenkara flies!
