Saturday 10 May 2014 The river this morning is pretty high and slightly coloured but easily fishable all the same...fishing with a single sakasa kebari across and down as usual....I manage to land 6 and lose about three or four more...not bad for a two hour session...here's a couple of shots of the better fish.... and now for the best one of the session... Tight lines Alex

Saturday 14 June 2014 Nipped down to the river for 7am....the river is running high but clear....I decide to head upstream and work my way down....I've been using a simple white bodied sakasa kebari tied with Oral B dental floss...it's waxy and has a nice sheen to it....and has caught me loads of fish so far this season....today is no exception...for my two hour session I manage 10 fish...and here's one of them

Saturday 19 July 2014 - Polton Gave the stretch just above Polton Bridge a go this morning....the river was low and clear....saw a few rises but worked my way downstream with a single sakasa kebari....missed a few but landed this little guy.... it's only a small grayling but I didn't think they got up this far....so the grayling are quite widespread throughout the River North Esk.... although I've never caught one in the River South Esk...yet

I'm stopping at the Musselburgh Premier Inn on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning on the 28 /29th. I will be bringing my rods with me. Could you suggest some parking and fishing spots please. , possibly have complete fishing beginner with me as well. Virtual guiding in exchange for dinner and a beer with my colleague and myself if you fancy it ... best regards David

Monday 1 September 2014 Headed down to the river after tea....I'll get at least an hour an a half in anyway....fishing a dry fly upstream...a few splashes but no takes in the first couple of runs...as the light begins to fade the rise comes on at last. I landed 8 fish and missed loads of others...here's a few from last night's session.... Tight lines Alex

I was another vertically challenged fisher when I was younger chasing wild trout with worms. Sounds like you had another fabulous session. I've a new prototype to play with so I really should get out.

Hi Alex I've just joined the forum and have been following your adventures on the Esk with great interest. I moved into Lasswade a few years back and I have ventured down the wee river on a number of occasions. I have had a fair bit of success just down at the bridge at Lasswade with some nice fish to 3/4lb One of your post flagged up when I was doing a search for 'Grayling in the Esk' the other night, I've been champing at the bit since the end of the trout season and fancied checking out if the Esk held a head of Grayling. So I read your post with intrigue, and was delighted to see you've had some success.. Have you been out this season? I would be keen to chat more about your approach and also to get a bit of advice on where to fish! Regards Marc

Marc, I have fished a few times this year for grayling, only an hour or so at a time, just down from Lasswade Bridge. I park the car at the swing park the other side of the river from the Laird & Dog. Unfortunately I haven't had a touch so far. Dalkeith Country Park is good although the Park Rangers there will ask you to leave if they see you fishing as the park is privately owned by Buccleuch Estates. I did go to the Park Rangers years ago now and was given verbal permission to fly fish on C&R basis but staff have moved on so not sure what current situation is. The problem the Park Rangers have at DCP is that salmon and see trout run in October / November and it gets poached rotten by the locals which is a pity. I'm pretty sure there must be grayling in the River South Esk but never fished for them in that river although I've always promised myself to do so...maybe some day. I don't think the River North Esk holds prolific shoals of grayling as the most I've ever caught in a single session is 2....or maybe it's because I tie my own flies and can't fool them Definitely get out and give it a go...you never know. Tight lines Alex

Hi Alex Cheers for the reply. I've now been down three time since posting the thread, first was down to DCP and fished down from the wee wooden bridge at the back of the house for about a quarter of a mile. I didn't get a touch but theres some really nice runs down there. Last weekend i fished down at Polton for a couple of hours and got my first ever Grayling, lovely fish of about a pound and a half. Then about twenty minutes later another of similar size, so i must admit I'm rather chuffed with myself! However myself and my brother went down again today and didn't touch a thing, I'm unsure whether it was maybe due the drop in water temperature as it was down a few degrees on last week. Good news that they are there and taking and hopefully I will see a few more over the next few weekends

Marc, Good on you...looks a cracking grayling....I fish Polton a lot for wbt, but was planning a trip up there in the near future...you never know we might just bump into end other one of these days. I was going to nip out for a few hours last weekend but chickened out because of the weather (couldn't be bothered scraping the ice off the windscreen) Tight Lines Alex
