Wednesday 31 July 2013, AM Stopped off for just over an hour before work....I'm fishing the dry fly exclusively for a change to see how I get on...well I'll stick to the dry fly I think as I caught 8 trout....not a bad start before I head off to work....I'm fishing this evening so I'll continue where I left off...hopefully PM Back on the river and for the first 2 hours not a fish to hand just a few splashes at it....I get to the head of a nice run and catch a nice fish first cast...that's more like it...I catch another 2 in quick succession....so I try Sonia's trick and stay put....I take a total of 8 from this little run...I fish for another hour or so and catch another 4.....20 for the day is my best result by a long way this season as the river has been so low....here are some photos from the day... Tight lines Alex

Sonia's trick of staying still is catching! I still find it hard to slow down my fishing.

Simon, I meant to report that the morning session's fish all fell to a dry fly that you sent me last year to try out....I caught at least four on it last year and eight in the morning session I reported on before it fell apart ....it was a little size 16 gray and black palmered style fly....must have been well tied...not like my efforts Tight lines Alex

Tuesday 6 August 2013 Stopped off at Polton after work and walked downstream for half a mile or so intending to work my way back to the road bridge...the river is very low and clear...I don't remember seeing the river this low before....it's going to be a tricky session I guess...I using a size 16 F Fly....when I entered the river there is a nice run and pool down from me so I fish the F Fly as a wet....I get a few takes but no fish comes to hand...I fish for three hours on the dry working my way upstream...I end up with 4 for the session one of which was the smallest grayling I've ever seen never mind caught...it struggled to make three inches in length Tight Lines Alex

Great to know that the grayling are reproducing. I'm not very good on the computer(actually I'm doing this on the iPhone) It's like tying a hook in the dark seem very tricky. Don't think I'll ever get into the 21 century:-)

Loved reading through this as I also fish the river esk. My usual haunts are musselburgh, Dalkeith country park, iron mills and had a bash around roslin glen. I've not fished with a tenkara rod but im really tempted to get one after reading this! I currently use a 7ft fly rod, perfect for this little beauty of a river. Maybe see you on the river one day. Jamie, I have 7',8' and a 9' river rods that I used on the Esks...but since discovering Tenkara I haven't used them once ...I'm heading up to Roslin Glen tomorrow after work....I always carry 2 T rods so drop me a PM if you can make it and you can give it a go....otherwise we can try another time....it's always best to try before you buy....but I'm sure you will enjoy the experience Alex

Monday 12 August 2013 Gave the upstream stretch at Roslin Glen a bash...it was pretty touch going but managed to land 3 wbt; one on the dry and the other two on a little spider pattern fished down and across. Tight Lines Alex

Tuesday 13 August 2013 I stopped off at Polton Bridge on the way to work and decided to fish a small sakasa kebari down and across...nothing in the first two runs then I had four on in quick succession from the head of one of my favourite runs in this stretch...only managed to bring one to hand though . Alex,
Sorry I didn't get your reply earlier or I would have taken you up on your offer. Me and my mate were down the country park this evening and had a good one, well my mate did. I missed around 10 but my mate caught 3 with one around the 3/4 of a lb mark. It was new territory too so all in all a very enjoyable evening.

Jamie,
We'll catch up another time...no worries there....looks like you had a good session down at DCP...even if you don't hook up it's always good when you tempt fish to rise for your flies...were you fishing the North or South Esk?

We were fishing the south esk near to where it enters the grounds of DCP. Some very deep pools which I didn't expect. Suppose that's what you find out when you have the waders on instead of fishing from the banks like I done 95% of the time in previous years! Ha!
I also went down tonight to the south esk and this time managed to catch 2 but on the small side. River was running higher than the other night and theres maybe signs that sea trout are about as I heard 2 huge rises!

Tuesday 10 September 2013 Thought I'd give the grayling a go and as I got to a nice pool I couldn't believe it there were a number of rises and some very definitely grayling leaving the distinctive bubbles after the rise....I tried two unweighted flies and managed to catch this little beauty... I caught two trout as well both around this size... It was a pleasant evenings fishing...I'm glad I made the effort. Tight lines Alex
