Sunday 5 January 2014 I haven’t fished since the close of the trout season but decided to give the grayling a go for an hour or so this afternoon…. my wading stick has packed up on me….it’s one of these telescopic trekking poles and the poles won’t hold when you extend and twist them….I’ll buy one from ebay tonight for £5….the river was running steady and clear….I’m fishing with two weighted nymphs with my 13’6” Eso rod….I’m using 10’6” orange level line…. I fish hard in the first pool for almost half an hour without any interest…just a snag up a tree….I break the cast and move downstream to the next pool…working my way from the top of the pool to the bottom I get a savage take and a fish is on….it gives a good fight but it is an oosbt…I take a quick photo and let him on his way….. I’m half way down the pool and cast upstream and let the nymphs sink…the line straightens and I strike….I feel a weight at the other end then nothing….10 minutes later the same thing happens again…another missed grayling…I persevere and eventually I have one on….I get it to the surface and I’m really pleased because it is a grayling….but my euphoria didn’t last long as it slips the hook….try as I might after that I get no more offers….I cast into a branch then call it a day….a pleasant hour and a half’s fishing…what more could you want on a Sunday afternoon. Tight Lines Alex

Good to see you out fishing Alex. Pity none of the grayling came to the net but that's a mice oosbt.

Guys, Thanks for the welcome back....I moved jobs in September last year and now take the bus in to work....no more stop off for an hours fishing for me I'm afraid. Also I joined a Golf Club in October which will further reduce my fishing opportunities....here a photo of the bridge that crosses the 17th hole...it's actually situated on the River South Esk which I fish frequently There are 650 members in the Golf Club and I've already converted one to Tenkara...he bought a rod in December so I'll take him out and show him the ropes...649 to go Tight lines Alex

Why not apply the Tenkara philosophy to your golf - just carry a 5 iron and a putter.......

orangeotter, Yes your observation made me lol...even Tenkara uses three items, rod, line and a fly....what happened to my golf ball....do you want me to look a right plonker on the first tee Alex

That section of the river in the photo of the bridge and a little further upstream produced some really nice fish for me last season. Can't wait to get back out when the season starts.
How's the course playing just now? Last time I played there I was -1 for the first 9 then bogeyed the last 9 holes haha!

dodgyguy, Yeah...that stretch right up to and beyond the wooden bridge was fishing really well last season....I think there are grayling in there as well...a couple of seasons ago I saw an otter with a silvery fish in it's mouth....I bet it was a grayling....I'll give it a bash and see what happens. Not played too much golf...don't like the winter greens....I don't sink too many puts on them Alex

Monday 14 April 2014 River North Esk – Polton My first cast is just before 7:30am…the river is steady and clear, the sun is shining and there are plenty of hatches of small olives…no excuses then. The first run no offers…I’m fishing a single size 18 sakasa kebari down and across which is my preferred method at this time of the season…..I don’t hang around too long and move down to a couple of nice runs and glides further downstream….boy has the characteristics of the river changed here….there used to be a fallen tree right across the river…now it is lying at the side which opens up the run nicely….however still no offers…the next run has changed even more….there’s been a landslide and now a small island has popped up in the middle of the run …..I reckon this will erode away as well over the season as it just seems to be a massive lump of clay and grasses…..not to worry the run still looks very inviting so I cast into the head of the run and pulsate the fly to entice a take….and not to disappoint a nice trout takes the offering….it’s only on for seconds and its off….I check to ensure the fly is still on which it is and I recast and work downstream…I get another good pull a bit further down the run and again no sooner it the fish on when its off again….I recheck the fly…everything looks okay so I continue moving downstream….I’m just slowly moving downstream working the fly when I get another pull…this time the little fella is on and after a good scrap the fish is in the net…and here he is…. -----average size for this river. I fish on for another half an hour and get about 4 tugs in one run….they’re pretty small as I see them flanking as they take the fly…..time to go home now…but it’s good to be back on the river. Tight lines Alex

Saturday 3 May 2014 River North Esk – Polton Gave the river a go this morning at one of my favourite stretches......I started here at this short run which usually produces some action.... ---but not this time....I'll still fishing a single sakasa kebari across and down...I move down to the next run....again nothing.... upstream from this run is a nice deep pool so I start at the tail of the pool and work up.....I get a savage take from midstream and bring the little fella to hand...and here he is... I work back downstream and manage another 6 and here's a few of them... It was a good morning's fishing notwithstanding having leaky waders Tight Lines Alex

Sunday 4 May Only a drizzle of rain fell during the night so the river should be running steady and clear....I'll carry on where I left off from yesterday's session and continue working my way downstream......first cast and a trout has a go at the fly but misses.....I recast over it a few more times without any response so I move downstream...at the next run I connect and land this little beauty....my day's been made already at it's only 7:30am I get a couple of other tugs but don't connect with any....downstream I go.....take one from the next run down.. I'm standing at the head of a nice run and further down this run I can see a few rises....there are lots of olives around.....no sooner had my fly touched the water when..bang... this guy takes with gusto.. I take another 2 from this run ....here's one of them.. I head about 1/4 mile further downstream and get another 2 before calling it a day... It's good to know that there is a healthy population of trout throughout the river...I don't think it'll be long before I'm back on the river looking for more action Tight lines Alex
