On Pickering Beck yesterday as my prize from the Wild Trout Trust auction. I was guided for the day by fabled Tenkara devotee Dave Southall. The conditions were far from ideal, the Beck was very low and running clear, the wind was terrible and got worse as the day progressed. Dave was very patient as I put fly after fly in the overhanging trees. In spite of the conditions I managed 4 fish to hand and several misses and drop offs. Interestingly 3 of the 4 fish were Grayling, which is a good sign as the population of Grayling has been in decline in recent time. By 3pm the wind was so strong and the rain was lashing down, we called it a day. I fished drys most success being on the Klink. I used a 12 foot Iwana due the need for a little stealth. A great day out, with a very knowledgeable Tenkara man.

Had 2 hours on Pickering Beck this evening. Decided to see how a later session would work out. Well it worked out great with 8 small trout to hand and several misfires. As soon as I went through the gate I noticed a trout rising so I extended the 12 foot Iwana and on the 2nd cast a nice little trout took the F Fly. A few Mayflies were coming off and some survived but it was fun to see the trout gobbling up this delicious treat. Attachment Deleted

A couple of Saturdays on the Beck. Firstly a fairly strenuous work party Saturday 28th September, when we were reinforcing banks and opening up the overhead canopy on the Beck upstream from Pickering town. Saturday 5th October I managed to snatch a couple of hours looking for my first Grayling since being back in the country. The Beck was very low and very clear, not ideal conditions but I did manage to hook 3 OOS trout before capturing the welcome Grayling below. Not a record breaker but welcome all the same. All the fish fell to Nymphs mostly to pink head nymphs. Fish were rising but I couldn't get them to take so I packed up and headed back home to York . If the Pickering Beck grayling are rising try a size 20 (or smaller) Shuttlecock, size 24 IOBO HUmpy or size 24 (or smaller) MMM (Minimalistic Micro-Midge). The latter is just a thread body with a tuft of CdC, see attached photo.

I took some Woodland Trust bods to the works on Pickering Beck that the PFA have done as part of a 4-site field trip to look at a variety of works in the "slowing the flow" project for flood risk reduction. They were very kind in their feedback and all said that they now have a new perspective on woodland management for ecological quality of rivers - and how interdependent these systems are.
Well done to PFA for the results of their working parties and for trusting the WTT's advice on further works too.

Thanks for the information on flies Dave. I don't know if I could tie on a size 24 anything but when I source some smaller flies I'll let you know how I get on.

Well worth it as, yesterday evening at the Savile club in London, the PFA got the WTT (Amateur) Award for their river enhancement work. A great evening except for not getting home till after 3am this morning!!!

Fantastic Dave, almost makes up for me not only blanking on the Beck yesterday but also breaking the tip on my Ayu, which incidentally is not available in the UK and will have to come from the US. I'll be looking at the UK produced rods on Saturday at the River Nidd.

My much anticipated size 22 flies arrived this afternoon and in spite of the gale force winds I decided I must try them out straight away! Well with the wind it was impossible to keep the fly on the water without some line also sitting on the water but I tried and tried to no avail. No rising and no takes. The Beck was coloured and up a little with plenty of leaves so I abandoned the tiny flies and went with a size 12 Klink with a size 14 pink head nymph under. No joy. Then blow me if a grayling didn't take the klink and again 10 minutes later. So 2 10 inch grayling was my afternoon's fishing in a gale, good result . Attachment Deleted
