Thursday looked like the best day of the week, it was! Although the rivers in Yorkshire were dropping, looking at the EA website they all looked a bit too high for my liking. I went back to Pickering Beck, which had dropped 2 cm overnight. The weather was beautiful, virtually no wind and sunny, what a change. Once again with my tiny flies in hand, I was out to catch Grayling. However, no one was interested for the first hour or so in spite of the occasional rise. I moved up stream and tried with the previous day's set up of size 12 klink & size 14 dink. A couple of fish had a look at the klink but decided against it. I swapped back to the 12ft Iwana with a size 22 IOTBI and first cast a nice OOS WBT took it. I went on to take another 4 trout out of the pool, mostly the takes were more like 'sucks' than rises. I fished on and ended the day with another 2 WBT on a size 22 Ffly. No Grayling at all, but fun to catch fish on such small dry flies. Another great day, made more so when I got home by the arrival of my new ESO 410 7:3 the quality of the tube & sleeve look outstanding I can't wait to try the rod when it stops raining. mspaddler, You will like your new rod I am sure. Got one a couple of weeks ago. Casts a line really well. As you say, great rod case. Good luck with the rod.

Yes thanks springman I'm looking forward to my new rods more on that later. I managed to sneak out for a little over an hour yesterday (my sister is visiting this week but wanted to walk York City Walls so I was free). Took my 12ft Iwana to Pickering and managed to land 2 nice Grayling and also a couple of OOS trout, all on a size 22 Ffly. Met another club angler who had also had a pass out of his house, he caught 13 trout in less than 3 hours mostly on size 12 Adams. The Beck was down from earlier in the week and is clearing fast, but leaves are still an issue of course.

Looking forward to hearing how you get on with your new rod. Leaves will always be a problem at this time of year. They drive me nuts!

Had hope to try the new ESO rod today but all the Rivers I fish were still too high for my liking. Went back to Pickering Beck. Wet and cold day 2 hits on dry and that was all she wrote. Today was a blank. Hopefully I will get to play with the new rod on Sunday following the SPRITE working party on the River Don.

Looks like you might have a high river on Sunday. I hope the rain is less than forcast as I'm supposed to be doing a Tenkara Demo on the Derwent near Scarborough on Sunday for the Grayling Society Symposium weekend!!!!

You were right of course Dave, not only was the Don high but it pretty much poured down all morning. Back to the Beck later today, looks like best day of the week as long as the Grayling Society haven't scared all the fish away!

Hope you had a good day today. EA river line shows the levels to be good. I've had an unsuccessful day trying to help Rod Dibble find & catch one of Mulberry Whin's huge grayling. Rod had 2 grayling & 3 trout yesterday on Pickering Beck but I gather it was a bit crowded with Grayling Soc. Symposium attendees.

Well I had 2 hours on the Beck this Afternoon. I really thought things may have been happening with the sun on the water most of the day, but no rises were spotted. However, no wind and good water levels made for a pleasant afternoon's fishing. The tiny dry flies did not produce today and all 5 OOS trout fell to nymphs. The first and biggest to a pheasant tail nymph and the remainder to a size 14 pink beadhead (trying to appeal to the Grayling but apparently not as none to hand today). The last trout was the smallest I have caught on the Beck probably no more than 4 inches, a good sign I guess let's hope it survives the winter. A pretty day in North Yorkshire. Attachment Deleted

Went across to the Beck yesterday afternoon. The weather was cool, not too windy and the level look great. However, when I got to the Beck it was like Piccadilly Circus! Four other anglers already on or near the water. All the water had been fished through and 3 of the club members were trotting so my hope for the elusive Grayling seemed a long shot. And so it proved, nothing on the dry, even the tiny dries, so I went to klink and dink and ended the short session with 3 OOS trout. A silver bead head was the fly which tempted the trout. In my walk along the Beck I spotted the biggest trout I've seen in the clear water, it was moving and obviously feeding, maybe next Spring? The levels in the Rivers the other side of the A1 seem to be dropping so Sunday I will be heading West.

Well after nearly 2 months without a Grayling, from the Beck, I finally landed one last Thursday. My new TUSA Sato rod had arrived the day before and I was pretty desperate to try it out. I could only legitimately fish for a couple of hours, so many other demands on our time at Christmas! The truth is the Beck is a little tight for the Sato, even at the shortest length, I manage more trees than fish. However, my initial thoughts on the Sato is it is a very light rod and even this stumblebum can make some half decent casts with it. The solitary grayling fell to one of those final casts of the day as I was walking back to the car. A pink head shrimp tempted the little chap. I'm looking forward to more time with the Sato, but not any day soon looking at the river levels plus I also manage to catch a stinking cold just in time for the festivities. And so it goes......... Glad you managed to get one of the few grayling left in Pickering Beck. I fished there for a couple of hours on the 23rd & only managed 4 oss trout (one on a dry).

By Wednesday I was getting a little desperate to go fishing. My Nissin rod tips had arrived from Japan and I 'needed' to see if I still loved the rod now that I had the new TUSA Sato. The rivers on the West side of the A1 were all too high and getting higher but the Beck had dropped to a very fishable level. I haven't had a lot of luck hunting for Grayling on the Beck in fact since September I think I have only caught four of the ladies. Well what a surprise then when I ended the session with 7 fish to hand and only 2 were trout. Not only that but I caught my best Pickering Beck Grayling. All fish taken on either pink or silver head nymphs. The first 3 fish were similar to my previous average size (see first photo) but the last two were pretty handsome if I do say so myself. Attachment DeletedI used both my Nissin and Sato Rods. Both great rods but not really tested on the Beck due to tree cover so mostly side casting. Hopefully the rain in the West will stop and I can do a side by side comparison on a large river. Attachment Deleted

Well done Brian! This is a good catch considering how few grayling there are in Pickering Beck at the moment. Long gone are the days when 25 to 30 grayling in 3 hours was just average.

Quick trip to the Beck this morning as the levels were lowering but as we found out when we got there still high and coloured. One nice Grayling to my feet on Gary Hyde's pink shrimp, best fly so far for me this winter. We left when the wind picked up and just before the heavens open. Still good to be out even catching trees and losing flies!
