Tuesday 4 June 2013 - Gore Wood I headed here early to try for the wbt again...the river is low and clear...it's a beautiful morning with the sun splitting the trees...I'm fishing a size 14 light olive sakasa kebari fished down and across...nothing in the first couple of pools then I manage this little one which was mighty welcome all the same... Tried for another half an hour without any further success before calling it a day. Tight lines Alex

Wednesday 5 June 2013 Fished for 3 solid hours after work at Dalkeith Country Park....the river is so low for this time of year that the fishing is really hard going....I switched from dry to sakasa kebari a few times and although I had 7 or 8 pulls on the line I didn't manage to land one...although I did have a couple on for a few fleeting seconds Tight lines Alex

Friday 14 June 2013 I decide to head down to the river around 9pm....the first run I fish I had about 8 good pulls and hooked about 6 but never managed to land any ...but my spirits are high...I'm only 20 minutes into my fishing session....I move down to another run and connect with one first cast....he slips the hook....a few minutes later I manage to land this one.... I get another couple of tugs from this run and manage to land another trout...slightly smaller this time....I try a few more runs and pools and although I get a few offers I didn't manage to bring any to hand. Sunday 16 June 2013 I cast my first fly at 06:15 hrs...the river is clear but low...nothing in the first pool...on approaching the second pool I see some fish rising....I cast down and across and immediately this little fella comes to hand... I work my way down the runs and pools and take another 7 very small ones before I pack up and head home. Tight lines Alex

grayling01, I was down at Gore Wood this morning...only managed 3 very small trout...I nearly got clobbered twice this morning with dog walkers throwing pretty heavy logs into the pools for their dogs to retrieve not realizing that I was fishing in the pool under the trees....I think I might stick to Newbattle Abbey College stretch...it's safer.....Gore Wood stretch has some nice runs and pools but this it's by far the hardest stretch to catch fish in both river Esks IMHO. The stretch at Newbattle Abbey College is fishing well at the moment with plenty of free rising fish in most of the pools. By the way what like is the road leading up to LoganLea...the last time I was there it was so pitted that you almost needed a 4x4 to get up to the fishery...which is a pity because it's a really nice fishery as rainbow trout fisheries go Tight lInes Alex

Twenty fish that's good going Alex. You were lucky not to get your rod broken in the stick throwing incident. The road up to Logan lea has been fixed not to a good standard but a lot better than before. The burn that runs into Logan lea looks fine for the t rod plenty of wee WBT and a few bigger rainbows darting about food for thought:-)

Saturday 10 August 2013 It's 06:30am and I'm heading down to Newbattle Abbey stretch...I'm fishing the dry exclusively....I start at the golf course bridge and work my way upstream... There are a few rises...but none to my F fly....I try a few pools and runs but not even an offer...I decide to change flies...I've tied up a few daddy long legs type files....without the legs....they look complicated to tie in....I'll leave that for another day....there are a few fish showing in the run just further upstream...so I approach stealthily and cast my fly just above the rising fish...it takes the fly immediately and is safely landed... The fly unravels as I forgot to varnish the head....never mind I have another daddy long legs fly...without the legs...in my fly box....I didn't varnish this one either so I guess this will be a one fish fly if I'm so lucky....and right on queue a fish takes...its leaping about all over the place and shaking its head quite vigorously...this fly's got no chance of being a two fish fly....and I was right....the trout looks as though it's been eating a plate of spaghetti with the unraveled thread and hackles coming away from my sorry attempt at fly tying....one of these days I'll post a photograph of my sorry efforts and give us all a laugh ....here's the trout that fell for my sorry effort.. I like this little run although I never caught anything from it this morning..... ah well...fishing time is over...time head home for breakfast. Tight Lines Alex

Newbattle Abbey College - Wednesday 16 April 2014
I fished for just over an hour this evening....I'm fishing a size 18 green bodied sakasa kebari across and down...my usual tactics for this time of year....first run I catch a little guy about 6"...so I quickly release him and continue working downstream...nothing from the next run and head for some pocket water further downstream...at the end of this pocket water is a nice glide and I see a trout leap clear out of the water about 50 yards downstream from where I am standing...I fish this stretch hard and although I must have got around 7 or 8 pulls I don't connect with any of them....I give up and try another run further downstream....nothing from here at all so I pack up and call it a day.
tight lines

What a frustrating evening Alex. Still it beats working and a few pulls on the line are better than nothing.

Wednesday 3 September 2014 The river is running low and clear...there are a number of fish rising as I make my way downstream to Maidens Bridge and fish the dry back upstream to the car park...with the river being so low and clear the fish are easily spooked and go down after three or four casts...however there is a nice rise right under an overhanging branch in a nice pool...third cast over the spot and he takes...it's my best fish from the River South Esk for a while in fact I think it's the biggest trout I've caught from both river's this season...he gave a really good fight and after a quick photo he's off to fight another day.... I managed just another small one before calling it a day. Tight lines Alex

Thursday 21 May 2015 I'm doing the usual and working my way downstream fishing a nymph down and across...first cast and I get one he's only small about 8 inches or so but it's a promising start...A couple of runs further downstream I get this slightly bigger one... After releasing him a try the run not holding out much hope after the show that this little fella put up before he was brought to hand...but I was wrong...next cast I hook this beauty which is my best fish this season to date... Tight lines Alex
