I feel for you guys down South...with the floods and all...some days it's been dire up here, but the rivers drain away pretty quickly and the rainfall has been nothing like you guys have experienced....I'll try hard and catch a few ladies of the stream and post them on the site...that'll really cheer you up ;D ;D ;D
tight lines...when the rivers are fishable

Sunday 30 December 2012 The river is fishable but only just....it's just a short session anyway so I'll see how I get on...I fish for just over the hour without so much as a tug....I'm sure they must be grayling in this river...I'll need to come back another day tight lines Alex

I have fished that stretch of water lots of times over the years. Have had lots of trout mostly in the summer months but never had the Lady's of the stream. Keep up the good work Alex, can't wait to read that you have caught a Grayling )

I caught 16 grayling last year all in the North Esk and I ain't caught one yet in the South Esk so I'll keep plugging along until I nail one or until the trout season starts

16 grayling is good going Alex well done. But the grayling on the south esk seem to be a lot more elusive. I have had them on the Woodburn stretch a few years back now. There are 2 weirs on the s/esk not including the over flows at Roseberry and Gladhouse. I have fished all these nooks and crannies over the years and never seen or had a lady of the stream. But I'm by no means the best fisher. I don't think there are grayling above the first weir at Woodburn. The only way to find out the facts is to fish fish fish sounds like fun :-)

Managed to get a hour and a half on the south esk today at the Sun Inn. Trying to get the hard to get lady of the stream with no joy water was looking really good. Didn't fish to hard (on one of my last posts I said there was 2 weirs on the s/esk there is actually 3 forgot about the one near the gore burn).

Thursday 28 March 2013 I gave it a try for an hour or so...nothing doing...it was still pretty cold..only 4 degrees C...just waiting for the weather to get a bit milder and see some fly life on the river...then we might see some action. I start here and work my way downstream... tight lines Alex

Saturday 6 April 2013 It's 8 am and I'm heading off for an hour and a half's fishing....I scraping ice off the windscreen so I'm not full of confidence that I'm going to connect with a wbt this morning...never mind I'll use the trip as a bit of a reconnaissance trip...about 100 yards from the car park I cross over a bridge over the River Gore....here is a shot where the two rivers meet.... the River Gore is about half the size of the South Esk so I might just that a go in May or so...I walk upstrean for half a mile or so and start here.. I've never caught anything from this pool but it looks the part...it's just off the main path so it is frequently visited by dogs plunging in...well surprise surprise no takes so I keep heading downstream....I fish numerous runs, riffles and pools but no interest is shown in my flies....I finish up here .... I've caught quite a few in this run over the years...but not today... No fish...but it's another cracking day to be out on the river. tight lines Alex

Saturday 26 April 2013 I headed down early to Gore Wood Country Park for a couple of hours...it's only 5 degrees C so its not ideal...however I am going to work my way upstream using a single klinkhammer then change to a sakasa kebari and work my way back down....the river is running steady and clear...don't see much fly like though...I haven't seen a trout rise in either the North or the South Esk this season so far... nothing in the first three of four pools....I take a shot of one of the pools I am about to try...and here it is... I switch to the sakasa kebari and try to enduce the trout to take...but to no avail...another shot of the river... This cold snap will be with us for another couple of days so I'll wait for a few days before I venture out again.

Saturday 4 May 2013 Arrived at the river just after 7am....it was a bit blowy so I decided to head upstream a bit and fish the sakasa kebari down and across ....that way the fly is in the water for longer and I don't have to cast so often.....the river is higher after some welcomed rain on Friday....I wasn't sure if the river would be a bit coloured but it was still crystal clear...just 4 or 5 inches higher....looks perfect....still no sign of rising trout....fished hard all the way downstream...once again the fish weren't co-operating...however I did get a pull...missed...cast to it again and it took the fly again...but again I missed....I didn't really expect it to take it again so my reaction just wasn't up to scratch Never mind the sun's shining and I haven't seen a soul all morning....bliss tight lines Alex

Monday 13 May 2013 Tried the Gore Wood stretch again for a couple of hours…it was very cold only 5 degrees C…what’s happening to this weather ….I’m sticking with the single sakasa kebari fished down and across….the river was running steady and clear…didn’t see any rises or tempted any trout to my fly Tight lines Alex

Friday 17 May 2013 Heavy rain is forecast for tomorrow so I decide to head to the river at Newbattle Abbey College just before 8pm....first run I connect with a nice trout but he's off after three or four seconds....promising start though...I've only been on the river for a couple of minutes...I get another pull but no connection...I'm now fishing under the wooden bridge....I've never caught anything from this stretch before but this time I did get a pull but no hook up ...I move down a bit and see a nice little run with a number of trout showing on the surface....after about 7 or 8 pulls....my reactions must be slow....I finally hook this one... ... Apologies for the picture as the flash came on as by this time it was getting pretty dark with loads of bats flying around tight lines Alex

Saturday 1 June 2013 - Gore Wood
I'm all set up ready to go...its 06:50hrs when I make my first cast....I'm fishing down and across using a single size 16 dry...the river is low and clear...tricky conditions for me anyway...nothing in the first pool so I head down to the next run...I'm really surprised I don't ever get anything from this run it looks fab...so I work it quite hard trying to induce a take as I don't see anything rising....nothing...I move to the next pool and after a few casts I find myself snagged on a submerged branch...I give a few tentative pulls but no movement...I try a bit of sidestrain then crack...the rods broken at the handle section....Aaaargh...I've got three 'T' rods but the other 2 are in the garage...I head home and take the ESO 410 and head to Newbattle stretch which is pretty handy for me to make up for lost time....I only manage a solitary trout of 6 inches from here.
tight lines
Alex
