Saturday 2 June 2012 – Gore Wood It’s 06:45 and I’m putting out my first line….I usually walk past the dam and start there bit this morning I’ve decided to check out some of the runs before the dam….it’s pretty tree covered so I’ve collapsed the rod by a section…. Some casts I need to collapse the rod by a further section to around 9’ I guess….still this is virgin water for me…I don’t see any rises although the river is in perfect condition and crystal clear….a fish rises to the fly and I have him on…he’s jumping all over the place…I don’t have enough time to extend the rod to apply full leverage before the line goes slack…c’est la vie…I cast again and a fish rises to it but I miss….I’m on this little run for 40 minutes or so ….there have been a number of rises to the Grannom that I haven’t connected with and another two hooked and lost….aaaaargh…frustrating….I move upstream but decide to give it another go on the way back…..I work my way upstream covering most runs and pools without any interest shown in my fly….the I try a nice looking riffle….don’t see any rises but managed to land two…only one of any size…but have at least half a dozen rises to the fly but miss…..I finish off at the run I started and connect with the biggest fish of the day about 11” I guess …again he is leaping all over the place and shakes off the barbless hook….the collapsed rod didn’t help either…never mind it’s been one of the best days I’ve had on the river for a long time….time to head home for a nice breakfast. Tight lines Alex

Likewise, I read the whole thread yesterday, excellent. It's a river I should probably have fished more often than I have, it's been years. I had a trip planned but like so many this season so far it was cancelled. Looking forward to updates on this thread

Thursday 21 June 2012 - Gore Wood The rain's forecast about 10am so I'll get an hour and a bit in before work...looks like the weekend could be a washout....I start just down from the mill I'm fishing downstream with a single black sakasa kebari on 10'6" #4 clear level line and 4' of tippet....I have 3 tugs for my efforts and no hook ups...still I fished parts of the river I haven't fished since last season so it was good to get reaquainted with this stretch for future outings. tight lines Alex

Sunday 1 July 2012 - Gore Wood
The river is high but clear...didn't really expect this...I started with a damsel nymph fished down and across...nothing then changed to a Woolly Bugger....no touches on this either...then tried upstream nymphing with a single Sawyer's Killer Bug...had one on briefing before it slipped the hook...and that was it...no more touches...I didn't see a fish rise all morning.
tight lines

Thursday 5 July 2012 - Newbattle Abbey College
It's just before 2pm when I cast my first line...you can see from the photos that the river is flowing steady it's just a bit coloured but nothing to worry about
After Stevie's success in the Rhiconich River using a size 12 elk hair sedge I decide to give that a go...I start at the tail of the pool and work upstream...nothing....I work my way downstream twitching it, jumping it out of the water, submerging in...you name it...no touches....I move to another run / pool further downstream and repeat the same process with the same results...for the last 10 minutes I change to a weighted nymph tied on a jig hook...still no takes....the fish just ain't playing ball today...I give up and head home.
tight lines

Friday 27 July 2012 - Newbattle Abbey College I'm here on the river just before 7am, it's a cracking morning and the river is in perfect nice, fairly low so I'll try a single dry fly for an hour. One small fish jumps clear out of the water just as I'm setting up...a good sign...I cover him but no offers....I work my way upstream....this is the only fish I've seen rising and my time is almost up...just as I was reconciling to the fact that it I was going to blank today a trout takes the dry,,,I strike and he explodes into like leaping about like a mad thing...he's not big but welcome all the same. tight lines Alex

Tuesday 14 August 2012 - Newbattle Abbey College The last time I was here I tried the dry fly and just managed to catch a fish virtually on my last cast...this morning I'm going to try a black spider sakasa kebari fished downstream as I've been having good success on the River North Esk lately....after 5 minutes a fish takes the fly near the surface but no hook up....it's a false dawn as I try for an hour with no further success....a blank...me_no_likey tight lines Alex

Sunday 16 December 2012 - Newbattle Abbey College It's a nice bright morning...I'm surprised to see the river is a bit coloured...there must have been some heavy rain overnight....it's still well fishable though so I head downstream to work my way back up....my cast consists of two size 16 jig hooks with 2.5mm tungsten beads...one fly was made up with chamois leather that Simon had described in his fly tying posts....since I was in the mood I snipped off some a piece of yellow spongtex dishwashing cloth from the kitchen and made up some bugs from that as well...I'll be well chuffed if I catch a grayling on either of these two flies....I tried for an hour or so but no takes...but I'll persevere with this combination for a few more sessions yet...you never know tight lines Alex

That's it I need to move up north with you Leckie, you need to open some rooms for suicidal anglers from the South and wait for the rush!
