I found this rod on ebay, it's a Japanese import and it's going for just £28.66 + £12.74 postage.
The rod is 12' and 7:3 looks to be well made and buyers comments are positive about the rod and the seller. I don't like buying from international sellers on ebay or anywhere else for that matter but if you're in the market for a tenkara rod of this description and don't mind buying from Japan this might be worth a look.
I'd love to hear from any members who might have ordered one of these rods, there's a few Europeans among the buyers.
Do you think we'll see more Japanese sellers punting rods on ebay as interest grows ?

Will let you know how it performs when it arrives (probably in about 8 days time) and when I get the chance to take it out for a whirl! I can only see the Tenkara Rod market increasing, especially through Ebay... will be interesting to see how things develop... Cheers Gary

Hey Gary,
Looking forward to your reports on the rod and your fishing. Im new to tenkara too, the rod ave is from esoteric tackle, its 12' 6:4,)I spent a lot of time looking at options before buying a rod and managed to avoid the pitfalls. I think if more international sellers pop up on ebay selling cheaper rods it could encourage more people to take up tenkara. The main reason I shop in the uk is confidence,

Ordered on 23rd, arrived today (28th) from China! Amazingly quick... Rod quality looks good, feels nice and light, stopper fits nice and snugly. Not so sure about the silver painted end to each section, as it may spook the fish?? Last two sections are fully black though, so wouldn't imagine it will be too much of a distraction to them... A bit windy here today, but will take it out for an hour or so to see what I can do with it ;D Tight lines Gary

That's a pretty good service. It would be great to have a head to head comparison with more expensive rods, I almost bought one of these but when I went to look for it looks like they've all been sold. I go back and forth on these things quite a bit. Looking forward to see how you like fishing with it Gary.

Hi Douglas the price is why I went for this rod - thinking being that if I enjoyed the migration from Western style fly fishing onto Tenkara, that I'd go for a more expensive option. If it wasn't for me, then not much of a loss @ £28... (typical tight arse Scotsman, some may say ) Anyhoo, took it out for an hour tonight, bit breezy to be honest, but had fun pinging out a few dry flies upstream on the Nene, then a wee trip back down with a nymph or two. Rod was nice and light, but found it a little strange to cast (not surprisingly as it was my first venture into the T experience). Would say I was about 50% OK with the upstream dry flies, and a lot more comfortable going back downstream with the nymph. Allowing for the wind, I'd say it most certainly tickled my appetite for more... unfortunately the only thing I hooked was an over hanging tree branch, and an excessively tall and lanky group of stinging nettles Had a 10.5' furled line, with a 4' 3lb tippet. I'm right up for a head to head, and will book in a trip back north in the next few weeks, and let you know. Will do a wee report with some photos on the River Nene thread. Tight lines Gary

The rod looks like a bargain, the only snag I can see is if you break a tip, is there any back up service? Could start getting pricey at £40 then.

Hi Paul totally agree and understand, but will be 'uber' careful and try not to break the tip... At the end of the day, this is definitely a beginners rod, which suits me just fine at this particular time Reckon that could be the answer Douglas, if... I break the tip Cheers Gary

I was thinking the same myself. If you can meet up with any other tenkara anglers ask them nicely and see if your tips match. Maybe a yamame tip would fit.

I suspect this is the generic rod on which ESO and others up market model is based. The connection of the Lilian is the same on both rods, or appears to be. The ESO rod has a differant action and a more appealing finish. But with all products sourced from China you just know there is a large factory churning them out ... I have purchased one as well and already know i prefer the finish on the the ESO rod judging by the pics... Bear in mind it's £40 not £28 as there is £12 p&p and also customs to be prepared for ... ESO also provide fantastic after sales , including spare tips ...

Hi Landsurfer will be interesting to hear your views on the ST360 when yours arrives... I agree the finish could be better, but did highlight that on the listing above. P&P doesn't really bother me to be honest, and for info, I had no custom issues when the postman knocked the door. For me, a good buy for the cash, and not too overbearing cost-wise for any new folks (like me) who fancy a dabble without breaking the bank Cheers Gary

2nd time out with the rod tonight, for an hour. Much better casting and presentation... I'm learning! ;D
Only one little issue to report - the lilian came off just as I was finishing off. No big deal, as have super glued it back on. Just thought it was worth mentioning.
Will do a full report on the River Nene thread.
Cheers
Gary

OK,
I've just ordered one of these rods as a backup but given the feedback I've seen about the rod it might be worth more than backup status ?. I really don't like ordering from international sellers but all of the feedback on ebay is very positive and Gary had his rod in his hands very quickly and without any glitches so fingers crossed, it's only £40 at the end of the day so not a big loss really if it all goes to hell, plus Paypal are pretty badass at protecting buyers.
Anyway, this will be my second tenkara rod and at less than half the price of my first it should be interesting to compare the quality.
I'll be sure to post a follow-up.

For info, if anyone else is looking for a back-up it's on Ebay item no 140841880782 I'll do it the other way round... I have the back-up rod, and will buy the more expensive and 6:4 option when funds allow Looking forward to your views on the ST360 Douglas It will be interesting to compare the two actions, 7:3 against your 6:4 Cheers Gary
