I'm a beginner to Tenkara and am going to tie some reverse hackles spider patterns. Was wondering if I should tie on straight or curved hooks Thanks Ray

Ray I am not sure that it matters really and might be down to individual preference. I am sure the forum members all have their particular favourite hook pattern. Whilst spider patterns are traditionally tied on straight and slightly shorter shank hooks they also look nice on a curved hook too! I focus on hook weight more myself when choosing for dry or wet patterns. You will undoubtedly have other members come back to you with recommended hook patterns but I use a number of Kamasan patterns, B175. B170. B400. I also like the Grip hooks from Phil Holding at Fly tying boutique and several of the tiemco models. Perhaps this is not helping you really! All the best Glyn

Standard hooks from course fishing shops work well. If you want to try flies with silk eyes then a spade end hook is a good choice. One advantage is that course fishing hooks are usually barb-less.
I hope this helps.

I carry a range of Japanese Ayu hooks that have no eye and no spade end. They have small ridges on the shank to hold the thread and are wickedly sharp. I do a trial pack (http://www.esoterictackle.co.uk/14-eyeless-hooks) so you can test and see which size you like becuase they are not standard western sizes.
