Being a newcomer to Tenkara I was wondering when you use a furled leader and when a level line? Ray

I'd just sick with level line, start with a heavy line #4 or #5 and aim to cast a #3 to 3.5 when you get the hang of it. Furled leaders are easy to cast but are generally a lot heavier therefore you catch less fish as a general rule.

As Paul mentions, opting for a 100% fluorocarbon (not nylon in the first instance) level line around the same length as the rod plus 3 foot of tippet is a great way to get into the benefits of tenkara (e.g. all the casting line held off the water). It will make your progress much faster and more satisfying. Paul

Just remember to keep the casting "arc" of the rod very narrow (between about 12 and 2 on the clock face). The high "stop" on the forward cast (which is then held in that position as it tracks the drifting fly) is what keeps the loop nice and tight as well as keeping all the line off the water as (and after!) the fly lands.
It helps to angle the back-cast up a bit. This helps to tilt the forward cast down - but resist the temptation to push the rod tip down towards the water surface. This will open the loop and cause the line to land on the water.

All very sound advice. Making the casting stroke too long is the most common fault I see when people pick up a Tenkara rod. The heavier lines (#4 and up) do make it much easier to begin with. Make sure the line you choose is Fluorocarbon to begin with and not "nylon" which is much lighter and more difficult to handle. Just because a line has "Tenkara" written on it that does not mean it is fluorocarbon.
