I don't know if this is the appropriate place for the following question, but any assistance/information would be greatly appreciated. I'm pushing 75 years and getting just a little bit unsteady in fast water. I've been toying with the notion of a personal flotation device (life vest). I've seen videos of Oliver Edwards and he appears to be wearing a life vest that looks as if it might fill the bill. Basically, it drapes around the neck and down the front of the user. Since I only wear a very small chest pack (Fishpond Arroyo) when fly fishing, such a design shouldn't get in my way. Any comments, suggestions, etc on what device to wear would be most welcome. Thanks in advance - Irv

Hi Irv It is a good idea to get one. My daughter gave me one which is fine I think as I have not tested it yet and hope I never do. One important point is try not to get one through a fishing shop as they tend to be more expensive than the ones supplied by outdoor suppliers. I don't know the price of mine but it is a camo one and they suitable for fishing.

Irv, excellent idea, you need one which is automatic & manual. I wear one quite a lot on large rivers and it doesn't get in the way. We're only on this planet once....
It will cost approx. £50-60 unless it's an England which is hugely expensive.
Mine is a Baltic but you can google others.
They are called 'floatation collars' and coloured green for anglers.
If you struggle I can give you a supplier.
Good thinking !

Thanks for the valuable input. I'm in the States (should have mentioned that at the outset) but I'll search for "flotation collars" and . look for one that is automatic as well as manual. Again - many thanks

Anyone seen one built into a vest? Be neat.

Just worth a mention that you shouldn't wear them underneath either webbing straps or vests - coz they'll crush your ribs when they inflate. Always wear them as the outermost layer and be careful how you fasten your chest back so that the straps are not fastened around the flotation device.
I think I did see a vest/jacket ages ago with a built in self-inflating flotation collar but can't remember the make (or I might well have dreamed it!!)

Airflo market a vest which has a built in flotation aid - 2 versions, one for rivers and one more suited to boating. ENGLAND also supply a vest but very expensive. Either way, we should use them in appropriate situations.
