After a long long wait from ordering my sato to it actually arriving today I was itching to give it a try so sacked the sleeping off i'll be tired for my nightshift tonight but it was worth it, 15 fish in 45min from a tiny brook. The full length in the open areas allowed me to keep a good distance between me and the fish and I had multiple fish one after the other from the heads of the small pools I did lose sight of the level line on a couple of occasions due to it being very dull so laid a couple of inch on the surface and watched that instead, I fished it at all 3 lengths and it's absolutely delightful that big fish took some landing had to dip the net a couple of times when it swam at me to spook it back upstream. I think I might end up catching a condition called sato love

It did feel quite strange using a 12'9 rod on a stream that's not even that wide at its widest point

One thing I did notice was I bounced quite a few fish off, I think this is just a learning stage bit that will right itself as I'm not used to using such a soft rod even my 10' #3 seems stiff in comparison the kabari I was using is tied on a debarbed fulling mill super grub sz12 so if it keeps happening I'll try changing hook pattern.
Back out on Tuesday to have a day at it on a stretch of river where the average size is 10-12"

Glad to hear you're liking the Sato Martin Re - bouncing off fish; this is something quite common for tenkara novices (and even among some seasoned tenkara practitioners). Paul G and I cover this subject - and techniques to overcome the problem - quite often while guiding clients and it's something we'll be including in one of our future DVDs.

Nice stream. As for bumping off fish I use very sharp, barbless hooks with long fine points & try to smoothly sweep the rod back on the strike till the mid sections bend thus applying enough pressure to drive the hook home. Wrist flick strikes that will work at short range with stiffer rods will not work with Tenkara. I virtually never have big fish kick off as they have enough weight & usually pull hard enough that the hook goes home to the bend. Hope this helps & I'll be interested to see JP & PGs' next video that covers this topic.

With regard to losing sight of the level I used a pair of yellow lens glasses the other day and they showed the line (Sunline Buttobi)a treat.

Sorry to butt in on this thread Martin. Great pics of some great fish! I didn't want to start a new one on a similar subject, so, FIRST FISH ON FIRST OUTING WITH TENKARA ROD! On the Derbyshire Derwent with my new TenkaraTimes 1st Step, and gave it a good workout, admittedly using traditional UK stream dry flies...... Had 3 brown trout and 2 Grayling, the largest trout being easily 2 lbs, and the rod managed it easily; well with a bit of creaking and groaning (interesting noise actually. May not have had the joints pulled together firmly enough; don't know). Slight downstream breeze that made me struggle, but got enough decent casts in to catch, and the most impressive thing i found was that I had just the 5 takes, and 5 fish. No misses where I usually have a few (lot), and nothing bumped off, but they were all decent sized fish so that may explain that.
Thoroughly enjoyable afternoon that finished when I was fishing the normal fly rod. I stepped off a rock into a deep pool that I didn't see and the water was up over the waders and I was drenched. Change of clothes and home. Still happy though! Thanks for reading, Best regards, Del
