Hi I'm a tenkara virgin from West Yorkshire I got a cheap 8' rod from ebay that turned up today and picked up some useful information from Stuart Crofts at fly onlys spring show day at the weekend. I was itching to try it out this morning (before my rod arrived) so here's my offering of natural tenkara with a piece of bamboo I'm intrigued by tenkara as i love light fishing but it's also a way I can get my 7yr old daughter on the river with me although I think I'll have to start her out using duo until she gets used to it

Hi Martin,
Out of interest what is that line you are using? It looks to have a stripe.

Hi Martin, Out of interest what is that line you are using? It looks to have a stripe. Just some thick copolymer, I ordered some 3.5 BMS from your eBay page last night and I've some 0.29 red Sea line coming to see which suits the 8' tenago rod best I'll probably get myself an 11' rod sometime soon

Welcome Martin. I think you'll find 8' is rather too short for most situations. 12' is probably the best length for a first Tenkara rod; not too long on most wooded streams but not too short to fish bigger rivers. If you fish open streams 13' is even probably better.

Welcome to tenkara Martin you're going to love it. I agree with Daves I'd go with a 12ft rod. The 8ft would ideal for your daughter.

I'll probably get myself an 11' rod I bought the 8' so it would be easy for my daughter to handle, I could easily start her off one of my 3 weights but then there's line control from the reel with a possibility of over run so thought tenkara would be a good way to strip things back and simplify fly fishing in moving water. I do fish some small tight streams with low tree canopies though so the 8' will do for that as there's times when my 6' #3 seems too long
