I have just read a very interesting piece in 'Tenkara Talk' by Jason Klass over the use of fur as a hackling material and it does look really interesting. Lovely tying sequence and some good plus points made for adopting this style e.g. flexibility/durability. Has anyone tried using fur/guard hairs/zonker strip hairs as a hackle and used them in sakasa kebari patterns? It would be interesting to hear any thoughts. Here's the link. www.tenkaratalk.com/2013/11/fur-hackled-sakasa-kebari/Cheers Glyn

I know JP has been simplifying some of his patterns so that anyone can tie effective flies. Here is one that uses brushed out dubbing to give a mobile hackle effect behind the bead from a blog post of his. There are more in the blog archive for October and Nov as well. www.fishonproductions.co.uk/blog/blog-28.html?archive=201310

Hi Gly
I saw Jason's post also and found it very interesting. I've never used fur or guard hair for sakasa kebari patterns.
Two patterns I have found very effective with the control facilitated by the light line approach of tenkara although strictly speaking not traditional kebari patterns are the DHE by Bob Wyatt and the CDC & Elk by Hans Weilenmann:
Both patterns have taken wild brownies and more gratifyingly now winter has arrived, grayling on the surface almost everytime I have had an opportunity to use them.
Bob Wyatt also does a Snowshoe Hare Emerger as a variation of his famous DHE which I would like to tie sometime:

Phil I really enjoyed those three film clips - lovely simple flies which I guess do the business. They look 'fishy'. I think that if you try tying the fur 'hackle' the suggested zonker strip might be a really simple way of accessing the guard hairs as suggested in Jason's tying sequence. Thanks for posting those clips; I am sure that the guys will find them interesting. I am fishing locally two days this week as I am stir crazy after all the high water we have had. I am checking out the likely venue for our Tenkara trip to the Wye in the process. Tight lines Glyn

Nice videos but don't believe Bob Wyatt about CdCs being one fish flies. After they are slimed up rinse thoroughly, dry with kitchen paper towel, blow on them then apply Roman Moser Miracle Float very sparingly. I have caught over 50 fish on the same CdC fly on the same day!!!!
All 3 flies shown are great dry flies: simple but highly effective.

Its an interesting concept using different materials for creating hackles. I was thinking that it would be good to mix these fibres with deer hair or similar to get the flies to sit higher and look like emergers?
Might give this a bash.
Cheers,
