On the Saturday 2nd November at the Grayling Soc. Symposium many folks approached me to discuss Tenkara, a reflection on how interest in it is increasing exponentially. On Sunday 3rd November I demonstrated Tenkara rods, set ups & some of the techniques that I use for a small group of Grayling Society members. The Derwent at Hackness, near Scarborough was unfortunately starting to colour up badly after heavy rain on the saturday; however by dropping a few miles downstream into Forge Valley we gained a couple of hours respite from the worst of the dirty water. After showing the line set ups & how to attach the line & extend the rod safely then quickly catching a couple of small out of season trout on nymphs whilst demonstrating 'high sticking' the guys had a bash. Some were complete novices to Tenkara but others, like Roger (who's recently landed a big salmon on his Tenkara rod), were more experienced. All caught trout (about 20) but only 1 grayling before the river coloured up too much. We then looked in more depth at casting & set ups (comparing level lines of fluorocarbon & copolymer with furled lines), plus played with a number of rods, mainly with dry flies to really test out the casting. We all had an enjoyable time despite less than perfect river conditions & I hope that all gained something from my efforts.

Dave I recognise Roger Smith in those photos! Well done mate on spreading the word; too bad that the river was out of sorts. Could not get to symposium this year due to family illness but it sounds as if you gave the group good value. You must get down here some time and Roger and I can treat you to some of our local waters. All the best Glyn

Nice one Dave. Still remember Roger's account to Steve and myself at the Burton show this year.
Tight lines and happy tenkara

Thanks for the invitation to join you fishing down your way. Roger too was kind enough to invite me. The Wye system is one I've intended visiting for the last 5 years & have never quite made it. I must get there in 2014.
Yes Phil, Roger was saying to me how amazed he was at how the Tenkara rod just soaked up the fight of his salmon. Good stuff!

Thank goodness you had chance to wet a line, I couldn't make it this year. I hope others were as lucky but this was typical GS symposium weather.
You must visit the Wye catchment Dave !

I think the only guys who managed any fishing were those on the Derwent near Scarborough (most of whom blanked due to the colouring up), those on Driffield Beck & those on Pickering Beck.
As you say I MUST visit the Wye catchment & I must also visit the Dee again. At least I finally got to the Dee this year. THe grayling in my home rivers seem to be in terminal decline, whereas the Dee seems to be in prime health with regard to its grayling stocks.

Dave, thanks again for a great day albeit called short by the colouring of the river. You're welcome down here in 2014. Dogsbody

I'm delighted that you enjoyed the day & hope you got one or two useful tips.
I shall certainly make every effort to get down to the Wye system in 2014.
