Hi all, I was planning to head over to North West Scotland next week for some fishing but the weather forecast is looking poor with cold, rain and wind all week. With snow forecast on the hills around my home in the Cairngorms it's time for a change of plan.
So I am looking at heading down to North Yorkshire and basing myself around the Harrogate / Ripon area. Anyone have any info about day ticket river fishing suitable for Tenkara. I know about the Nidderdale Angling Club from a thread on this forum but that's about it.
Any advice would be much appreciated
Steve

Steve,
Most of my Tenkara fishing has been done on the Nidd on NAC waters. The river is fantastic and was full of fish last time I fished it. A favourite stretch was behind New York Mills or up past Summerbridge. I'm a little out of touch now so I'm not sure what is available on Day Ticket - Tight Lines!

OK Steve, here is another option. Buckden is a fair drive from Harrogate but beautiful Tenkara water and a beautiful drive into the Dales. I fished it for a couple of hours in earlier the Summer and caught two nice wild brown trout, after the weekend rain it should fish really well. www.bradfordcityaa.co.uk/site/?page_id=129

Hi, Thanks for the advice. I ended up with 2 days on The Nidd and 2 on The Swale. Conditions were far from ideal with cold weather, sharp showers and some strong winds. It had a very definite end of season feel. On The Nidd I fished the Glasshouses stretch and had one brownie. After all the strong winds at the weekend, there were so many leaves floating by it was hard for my fly to stand out (thats my excuse). I then went down to Dacre, and missed one fish when I thought I was caught on a rock and then saw it just as it got off the hook.
The next day I fished up from Pateley Bridge but never had a touch and barely saw a fish rise. The only other angler I saw had also blanked.
I then headed over to Richmond and fished the Swale at Easby. I had 2 fish in 2 casts, one on a down stream twitch the other within a couple of seconds of my fly hitting the water. After that it went quiet. My final session was at Marske and again I drew a blank as did the other angler I saw, though he was thrashing the water with a bite detector.
Until this season I have hardly ever fished on rivers and the ones I am fishing in Scotland are small mountain streams, very different to the Nidd and Swale.
Despite the lack of success I learnt a lot about fishing tenkara on bigger waters . Would I have done better switching from my usual amana sakasa kebari, maybe but sticking to the same fly did help me improve my presentation technique. When one angler asked me if I was fishing a wet or dry fly I replied 'its whatever I want it to be'
Sadly, the season has now finished on my local rivers (20th September) so it's mid March before I can fish them again.
