Fun day on the River Nidd today. Nothing rising at 1130 when I got to the River. Set up Klink and Dink on 12foot Iwana. Managed 3 trout on the Nymph (silver) 2 were good size stocked fish one WBT about 8 inches. Changed set up after noticing a couple of rises. Fished dry with Deer Hair Sedge and managed to land probably 6 more good stockers and lost a few trying to get them in the net. A really good session topped off with a fly by of a Kingfisher the first I have seen in over a year. Photos not uploading will post later.

My wife has gone to Minnesota, USA for the Summer, I will follow in 2 weeks time so in the meantime I intend to get as much fishing in as possible. Today on the Nidd upstream of the Millennium bridge, all the trout from the bridge up are wild. Water was low. Klink and Dink caught 2 small WBT on the nymph then 3 on the Klinkhammer. The takes were very subtle more like a sip than a gulp. Photo is of the nicest WBT from this section. Saw 2 other anglers setting up so decided to go to Glasshouses. Really tricky not as active as last week and the stock fish did not want what I was offering with every change of fly they would have a go then reject. I finally tempted a stocker with the smallest fly in my box then went above Glasshouses bridge and hooked and landed a nice WBT to round off my day. Attachment Deleted

Well in my 'Fishathon' I have now fished the Nidd 4 times in the last 7 days. Some Tenkara and some western style. It hasn't always been as fruitful as I had hoped but I did have great company on a couple of occasions. Yesterday evening I fished the Glasshouses stretch. Glasshouses is stocked, it is stocked with some healthy, feisty and large fish. I landed 2 and 2 broke my tippet. In addition well over twenty fish attacked and rejected my offerings. I think that may be my last session at Glasshouses with the Tenkara, as exciting as it is hooking up with those large fish, I don't like the idea of trout (even stockers) going around with my flies in their mouth. What knots and tippet are you using B?
Also - what size are the stockies?

Hi Paul I was using Stroft 0.12 (1.8kg breaking strain) and have been tying a clinch knot but went to an improved clinch after the first one broke off. I suspect that the stockers are 1 1/2 lbs. Problem is they are feisty and dart across the river with no chance of me following them as the water is a little deep.

Some interesting research that JP found on his strain-gauging rig was that clinch/improved clinch tended to break somewhere around half of the stated breaking strain of Stroft 0.12. A pitzen loop knot retained a lot more (up to around 80%, and a Palomar knot retained between 80 and 100%. Also - strong "side strain" with a good deep bend in the rod can be a real help in turning fish. It is really easy to end up with the rod pointing towards the fish when trying to "yield" to a fish or follow it with the rod. This puts a lot more pressure on the line (much less rod "cushion") and also is pulling in direct opposition to the fish. Could be some stuff to try out whenever you find yourself into a decent fish

Thanks for that good information Paul. I guess you are right I lost the 2 fish with the line going straight out from the rod I forgot about 'side strain' in the heat of battle. However, that Palomar knot is just too difficult for this old geezer, I'm pretty much cack-handed when it comes to knot tying! I will be back to tackle those 'stockers' in September if there are any left.
