Hi all.
I did mention posting a few coarse fishing reports on the "T" so will start with a struggle.
The weather hasn't helped things with the Soar in Leicester, near my home, measuring a couple of 100mtrs wide not the usual 20 feet!
Desperate to wet a line I braved the G.U.Canal for a couple of cold, wet & windy hours last Saturday. At least canals are imune to flooding if it's wet but freeze if it's cold. With canals & rivers to choose from there should always be some fisheable water to be had...I far rather be on rivers though.
If you don't know- canal fishing with fly in winter isn't an easy task. To not dry net (my match/biat fishing background) is a result.
As it hadn't been below zero for several days I thought any little perch would be obliging...they were. I took 8 of them in a little over 15 minutes but none of them bigger than an oz or so.
I went for them as the easy option, wanting a few fish under my belt before the real challenge of a roach.
The perch were all taken near lock sidings, they love the vertical brick walls, on a #16 HE tungsten taddy fished on a Diawa Kiyose 3.0m.
That rod is a lovely stiffer actioned rod perfect for jigging taddys about. (I used the 3.6 version a week earlier in Huddersfield to take 15 grayling and 15 out of season browns)
Nothing bigger showed and so I decided to set up my Diawa Sagiri 3.9 with a team of 3 light wt nymphs and try for a roach or two.
These I fished down the middle in the deeper dirty water where I hoped the roach would be holed up.
It wasn't easy! The wind was dragging the #3 wt level line about too much so I chopped it back to around 6 ft and went walk about searching for a slightly more sheltered swim. Hopefully in calmer water any tiny take might be noticable.
An hour later and several more swims tried, without any response, I was soaking wet, very cold & seriously considering home.
A calmer zone above a lock gave me a little more confidence though. After 5 minutes here two little plucks on the line resulted in a silver fish to the bloodworm I had on the point. First fish to my Sagiri.
I'd got it for dace in the local brooks but a canal roach wasn't a bad way to christen it.
That fish warmed me a little and more importantly gave me faith in my method.
A move below the lock & I thought I was in again but it turned out to be a tiny perch.
Next cast though and a second roach fell to the bloodworm.
Ten minutes more was all I could handle especially as my old Sims jacket is now about as waterproof as my scoop net...it's great 'til it rains!
Two roach and 8/9 small perch...not too bad.
