As part of the Grayling society symposium at Llandrindod Wells last weekend we were forced to fish the upper Wye in the Doldowlod area - tough luck! The weather gods smiled upon us with cloudless skies, sun and little breeze after the morning mist burned off. Levels a little high but good clarity. Myself and two colleagues split up to try and tempt a 'lady' or two. Starting with traditional rod and line brought some results and by midday a sporadic hatch started with a few risers. I came to a section where a large rock divided the strong stream and left a long quieter strip which looked inviting. My rod set up failed to hold it in the required zone so out came Tenkara. With this I was able to hold across the fast area and fish properly. Instant success to an Olive nymph with grayling of 35 and 40 cm plus others. Got one or two on Grayling steel blue dry a little later. Once again, this proved to me that the method does have great advantages in certain scenarios. Cust - I would not have believed a rod could bend so much!! Have been trying to attach a piccie but it has not worked. One of my colleagues - 'Dogsbody' also had Tenkara success to the same size of fish. Awesome day.

Cheers Gary. I made the mistake of thinking I could add a picture after the post was done but it seems that is not possible. Yes, nice fish and not the only one. One of my colleagues had a 45cm fish on dry fly - brilliant. Off to the Wye in Derbyshire this weekend to fish Haddon Hall with the Wild Trout Trust - never been there but I believe it is good. Thanks for your help Glyn

Flatsghost, I too went to the w/e at LD, not been to one for a while and thoroughly enjoyed myself.
On Sunday I fished on the R. Lugg at Mortimer's Cross, we had been advised that it might be still running high and it was. Wading was getting a little bit to dangerous for my liking where I wanted to fish, so I was somewhat restricted. I did manage one fish on a leadhead fished on a 12' Iwana. There was a hatch during the afternoon of small upwings but no fish were rising to them. Would love to go back and fish it in better conditions.

Hi Hobgoblin Yes tough luck on the high water. The Lugg takes forever to run off which can be a good and bad thing. It is a good beat and has some good fish. Glad you enjoyed the weekend as I was involved in the preparations and the Saturday events! It was a pretty good weekend all in all but a shame that some got good fishing and some struggled. Not sure if Mortimers Cross has a wash off policy or not - you might get another day if it has - check that out. Do you get your name from the Beer type?? It is on draught at a pub I go to once a week! Cheers and hope to see you at Pickering next year or maybe the Dee trip with Orange otter.
