A quick report following my first trip with Tenkara to the Wye at Doldowlod.
River still running quite high but although stained it was fishable despite tricky wading. I have just purchased the 13'6" 6 :4 from Esoteric and was itching to give it a go. I started with traditional fly and then couldn't wait any longer so rigged up with a 10' leader from Custom Furles loaned to me by 'OO' - (replacement on way Louis). A fast moving gravel glide about 2' 6" deep was chosed as one of my companions had taken a grayling already on Tenkara earlier. Using a home tied magenta shrimp I managed to land number 1 Tenkara fish - a 10" grayling - brilliant. Then lost another at about 1 1/2 lbs - damn it. Persisted and later a superb 16" WBT to shrimp and then two grayling to a dry CDC olive. Delighted to have broken my duck and can I say that the Rod and leader complemented each other perfectly and performed eqaually so. The big trout went crazy and I could not believe how much the rod bent to absorb the linges - brilliant. The grayling to dries were in a little calm pocket and I managed to hold the fly over a faster run to get good presentation.
A very happy angler left the river I can tell you. Even at 64 I have experienced something new and effective in the wonderful world of fly fishing. Thanks to 'OO' for motivating me and for the sound advice and to Daniel and Simon for the excellent bits of kit.
I have tried to attach a picture of the WBT and hope that it works - gorgeous fish.
