Took the kids to Chirk Fishery kids pool yesterday - so naturally took along the 'T' 'just in case'!
Managed to sneak off for an hour but it wasn't looking good - fish rising everywhere but well beyond the range of a T - especially when it immediately became apparent that I didn't seem to be able to cast even a rod's length!
Ended up at the top of the lake where the stream flows in.
Numerous feeding fish at the tail of the stream, just out of range.
I'd wisely left the other rods at home so had to make the best of it.
Settled on a 45 degree downstream presentation and tried to follow the fly, a Griffiths Gnat on the surface (Thanks Simon!) as far down as possible. The less I thought about it the the better my casts became until I was finally getting the fly not too far from where I wanted it.
After umpteen determined approaches by fish only to turn away as the fly came up short at the end of the line I came upon the (obvious!) solution - lengthen the tippet!
I went from 4 or 5 feet out to 6 or 7 and bang - we're in!
LOADS of missed takes - but they were definitely taking.
Finally landed the one in the pics, just under 18"
By now the kids were getting interested so reluctantly handed over the rod to 11yr old Jasmine (I was enjoying myself!) After not too many failed casting attempts she began to get them 'in the stream' - and she was in! What a thrill - and a gorgeous brown in the net! Then another - played it well for a few seconds but then it was off.
Took the rod back for another try and in again - almost at the net it took off, almost at the net and off it went again - took the rod horizontal - and kept on going! A 3ib tippet was no match - I need another Griffiths Gnat Simon!
Maybe not 'proper' Tenkara fishing - who cares! ;D
