Well, the rivers are all in spate again so no chance to try out my new rod but the bench is always open so I tied up a couple of patterns for when the rivers drop. I've tied these using cock hackle with the advantage of fishing them wet or dry, the stiffer fibers means slightly less movement when fished wet but more versatility in the pattern overall.

They both look like great fish catching patterns. I need to tie some simple black ones. I like the red tag on the gold ribbed hares ears. Is that a mono loop?

Yes it's just some cheap 15lb mono in green I had lying around, I can't even remember why I bought it. I was probably just cruising round the shops putting stuff in the basket In my experience it's hard to beat a simple black spider, although I love to fish lots of patterns I'm sure I could fish it all year and have just as good a year as any other.

The hooks have a really nice shape, sadly they did come with a micro barb but that was flattened at the vice. I really just wanted to tie some flies and the tackle shop didn't have the hook I was looking for so I got these, they are ok I suppose but I'd rather have barbless. the nice thing about the micro barbs is that they crush down very nicely
