I know Tenkara is mainly thought of as a method for fishing rivers but I am having great success lake fishing for wild brownies at Rosebush in the Preseli hills. Carefully fishing the dry fly about 3 to 4 ft out from the vegetation ( see pic below), I do this by slowly wading along the bank edge. Yesterday evening I had six lovely wild brownies and missed many more. I have fished this way in the past with standard fly gear but have had no where near the success that I'm having with the tenkara rod. Tenkara has turned me into a dry fly wizard. I'm also finding it a productive way to fish from a boat although landing fish is a bit tricky. I've re read Simons post on posting pictures so I hope this time it works.

That sounds like great fun Paul but I guess you're in trouble if you hook a whopper. You've got me thinking about a lake above Bala which has a large head of fish up to about 3/4lb.
I'm sure more of us will be interested in trying it.

Beautiful fish and great fun. Perhaps if I get a reservoir license I'll have a go next season quite a few of our reservoirs would suit this method. (We have 6 in total on the Isle of Man.)

Hello Orangeotter/Cus, yes it is great fun nothing beats river fishing but it's a good alternative when the rivers are high and coloured ours here are just getting back to normal.
No chance of getting into anything really big in this lake a 1lb wild brownie is a monster, there are no rainbows occasionally I catch the odd rudd or roach ( not sure how to tell the two apart)
I'll be taking the tenkara rod to the lake district in July when we're on our hols, there are lots of little hill tarns up there I'd like to try.

Paul,
The T rod is great for lochs and reservoirs that hold wbt.....it's amazing how close in the fish are so the fact that you can't throw a line as you can with a western rod, line and reel set up it's much of a disadvantage when you can catch them at close quarters much more stealthily...your pictures are great...your a quick learner when it comes to posting them on the forum.

Paul,

I don't know how I managed it either it just came out like that when I posted it. It was quite a nice surprise anything could have happened. I'm sure next time it'll be a complete cock-up.

nice to see a new place being explored with a tenkara rod and lovely pan sized fish. i am quite partial to mountain wild trout - and usually take a few for the pan, but havent been fishing on a mountain lake for several years, the last being Llyn Diwaunedd in Snowdonia. I think i would feel under gunned with a tenakara rod in such vast windy places, but when i think more about it, the big fish 1-2lb wild brownies often lurk closer than we think, especially at dawn in the rising mist in the shallows on a lightly placed midge.

Paul, the picture you have take and posted look great! You've cracked it. I caught my first tenkara fish on a still water all those years ago, a nice brook trout on the dry at Chirk.

Thanks Simon, I think I've cracked the photo posting also I seem to have cracked the dry fly fishing on Rosebush I've consistently caught up there. However now the river is back to normal I'm really struggling to catch, I've had some limited success one day I caught 10 on the Cleddau but that was a one off.
The last couple of evenings trout have been rising every where, I'm getting loads of refusals. I'm using 3lb fluoro trying to match the hatch and avoid drag. They're driving me insane, does this happen to anyone else? It seems I'm not quite the dry fly wizard I first thought I was:(
