Does anyone fish the Teviot? This year I have bought a Hawick A.C. ticket and so far in two trips to the river, I haven't seen the sign of any fish except minnows in the ditch mouths below Denholm Bridge.
That day there were a reasonable number of flies on the water, large dark olives and a few march browns, but not a fin stired.
Yesterday I went to Newmill above Hawick and wipped over some fine looking water. It was a cold flyless day but with the consolation of an upstream wind. I fished over different types of water and peered beneath it as far as I could, but moved and saw nothing.
Is there just a sprinkling of fish? Is it a late river? I met no other anglers, perhaps that should be a hint.

chriscreeler, I have never fished the Teviot however I think what your experiencing is pretty similar to the Tweed and other rivers around here...buglife has been out on the Tweed a few times without any interest shown in his flies... a guy from my work was down on the Tweed at Gattonside last week with no success...a few local anglers showed him photos of cracking trout they had caught and said that the fish only come on in very short periods between 11am and 2pm...they don't bother fishing outwith that period at the moment. Don't despair...the fish'll be there tight lines Alex

Chriscreeler.
I have fished Teviot a good bit over the last 3 years & found it difficult early on. It tends to pickup around middle June & fishes well through the summer & into september. Ive found the evening the right time to fish & have caught well on dries into the late evening.
Another option is to contact the Orvis shop in Kelso (01573 225810). Ask for a guy called ronnie, He knows the Teviot inside out & his advice has helped me out several times when things have looked bleak.
Hope this helps. Regards Stevie.

Thanks for the advice and information. I guess I'll have to bide my time.
Adam Dryden had a good opinion of the Teviot, here's what he has to say: ''Teviot joins the Tweed at Kelso. It is an excellent trouting river, and has many good tributaries. It is almost impossible to go wrong in the Teviot. Towards the mouth you will find splendid streams for worm fishing. All the way up, till you get about two miles above the village of Roxburgh, you will find excellent water for all kinds of angling.''

I recall one evening last August on the Teviot close to the junction of the Tweed. It had been warm & sunny all day & the fly life coming off the water was incredible, but with the last 2 hours of daylight left it began to rain. Off came the dry fly & on went a team of 3 wets, if i remember correctly is was more than likely a small kate mc'laren, bibio & partridge & orange. Anyway i was expecting the rain to spoil things, Nothing could be further from the truth. The rain was knocking insects & flies from the over hanging trees & leafs into the river & the trout & grayling were having what i can only describe as a feeding frenzy.
I fished on, i tell no lie when i tell you that i lost count of the fish i returned that night, it was quite honestly a fish a cast.

Hi all of you guys who fish the Scottish waters...
I'm having 3 days on the Tweed trout fishing, first week of July - staying in Melrose. I'd appreciate any info on best places to go.
Considering the famed size of Tweed trout, maybe Tenkara is a bit risky but it's going anyway.
I've seen comments on Teviot which I've fished before and it sound good, but also interested in any other good trib's worth a visit.
Will appreciate any help.
Cheers,Louis

Hi louis.
There are some good stretches to fish in Melrose itself, you can get a day ticket from the Spar shop in the town. I believe theres also a stretch you can fish on Sunday, where i dont know?
Be careful though as most of the day ticket water gives preference to salmon anglers.
I have fished mainly around Kelso & sprouston weir, day tickets are around a fiver & obtained from either Tweedside tackle or the Orvis shop in Kelso. Try above Kelso new bridge in the evening on the dry, the water is alive with rising fish.
I mainly catch well across & down on the usual spiders & wets. Partridge & orange, small black & peacock, silver march browns, you know the score. I have also taken a few nice sea trout on the dry believe it or not. If i was to say big Yellow klink would anyone be surprised? because i was.
I've always found the locals who you bump into on the bank friendly & full of info.
You'll enjoy it & you should certainly take the T rod with you.
Regards Stevie.

Many thanks Stevie, really good info' - another friend says that it's largely gloaming/night for best results in July.

orangeotter, If you fish the Tweed upstream of the Junction Pool you won't be bothered with too many salmon anglers as all the early and mid season salmon run up the Teviot....anyway salmon anglers are a funny breed they start at 9am and finish at 5pm and are very rarely on the water outwith these times. Fish Pal Tweed is a good source of information...here's a link for you... www.fishpal.com/Scotland/Tweed/TroutClubs.asp?dom=Tweedtight lines Alex
