I have had three outings to the Irthing so far this season and have found it quite hard going. The first, on a bleak cold opening day to the Chapelburn area yielded two trout of 10 and 8 inches. There was a sprinkling of duns on the water at times, but I only saw three fish rise all day and surprisingly managed to catch two of them using a pair of lightly weighted nymohs fished upstream.
A few days later in slightly sunnier weather I fished below Willowford. There were just a very few duns and stoneflies about but no rises. I had an almost identical catch and they must have come from within four yards of each other.
Today I fished at Great Easby, the stretch in the photo, and had one little out of season grayling. I did hook another considerably larger which played deep at first, but when I saw it was another grayling I tried to hustle it out and the hook pulled free.

Lovely looking bit of Tenkara water that. Plenty of casting room. Thank you for the report. It seems there is another river on my list I must come and fish!
