At last the new 2010 brown trout season is here and we can at last fish my local club waters that are closed to us over the winter! I have been working many miles away, At 10am on opening day I'm still over 5hrs drive away, I hope the M25 and M1 are clear? The God of traffic is on my side, I arrive home to pick up Sonia only to find her walking the dogs? Not very impressed! We are short on daylight as we arrive at the river Tenkara rods ready for battle around 4pm. Both the River Alyn and the air are very cold. As with our river it has change over the winter months and with the help of the Human beavers? Deep holes have appeared and gravel beds have grown. With no intention of targeting the brown trouts Grayling are the quarry, with my Hi Vis leader and my and a GRHE on the point I only had chance to target pools where last season were productive. First pool nothing; second nothing; third nothing? What am I doing wrong? Called Sonia on the radio to find out if shy was doing any better, same as me? Arrived at a run that was not productive for Grayling last season, a run out of Gresford weir into a deep pool.
Casting into the fast headwater and following the nymph into the slower water, watching the leader like a hawk, one; two; three cast nothing, then a snag on the bottom only the bottom moved! A very nice Grayling came to the net, the first for the 2010 season.
He became an instant photographic model before returning to the river.
Another Grayling followed in quick succession. Now the cold air and the lack of daylight drove us off the river. Made it on the first day of the season and for 1hrs fishing did OK. Hopefully many more reports to follow this year.
