On Saturday the recently formed Allen Valley Angling and Conservation club held an opening of the season get together and fun competition, and I won the coveted 'Lead Trout Trophy' with two little fish. After beer, and chips with mayonaise in the pub at Catton with the other fishers, I had a look over some of the water, and fished for another two hours in the late afternoon, getting ten more, the biggest just nine inches. The Allen is a lovely characterful little river, so if you like picking the watery pockets of their small change, and relish the chance of a late season seatrout or two, it could be the place for you.
I'm sorry I put the wrong photo on and could not see how to get rid of it The one shown is of the Gelt.

:)chrisreeler, Both of these rivers look fabulous for the T rod....when you fish these small streams do you fish upstream or downstream for the best results....or does it matter Look forward to more posts in the near future...and congratulations on finishing top gun in your opening fun competition. Yes congratulations Chriscreeler.
I had a look at the East Allen last year on my way south from the Tweed to fish the Upper Tees, Must say it looked wonderful ( if a little low) & your post has given me a taste to return.
As you state, "pocket water" is the best description. Regards Stevie.

Alex,
Yes both the Gelt and Allen are cracking waters for tenkara, they are both well stocked and full of variety and interest. The banks are generally wooded, but not enough to seriously hamper you, and the upper stretches open with only a few trees. The Gelt is very near to Brampton and you should give it a try when you visit your nephew.
I usually fish upstream on small waters like this but have no hard and fast rules.
The Irthing also has some good water, especially above St. Mary's Vale, with fewer but larger trout. There are grayling and a few chub in the lower reaches up about to a farm called Wallholme.
If you do visit I'd be happy to show you around.
Chris.

The Allen Valley club also had a working party on Sunday to try and stabilize a length of collapsing bank. I went fishing afterwards and managed to get five little trout, the two biggest at 9inches; had many very fast, missed takes.

Chris, Not a bad start to the season with five trout...who cares if they are little....the bigger ones will come. The next time I'm down at my nephew's he promised to take me a walk around the local river....I won't be able to fish though 'cause I don't have a rod licence or a permit to fish....but I'd like to meet up sometime in the future and maybe wet a line down your neck of the woods...I think you can buy a daily rod licence...or is it weekly...not sure Alex
