An enjoyable read Alex.
Theres quite a variation with fish you've caught in terms of colour & spots, nice to see. 14 fish in a session is really good & i would count myself a happy man.
Regards Stevie.

Thursday 7 June 2012 - Polton It's 6:45pm yes pm...makes a change for me...I've just stopped off for just over an hour's fishing....I need to pack up at 8pm....I'm using a clear level line #4...it's quite long at 13' with 5' tippet and a single size 16 klinkhammer....I can hear the fish rising as I set up...loads of flies....olives, mayflies you name it....I get numerous rises but no hook ups....I keep moving upstream and again splashes and rises...I nick a few then I connect...it's by the net then I lose it...never mind...plenty more where that one came from...another few rises but no hook ups....I persevere and finally nail one ...and here he is I'm missing loads so I decide to take off a few feet of level line....that's better...and a few casts later a smaller fish comes to hand....the 5' of tippet is too long as I am casting under, over and to the side of overhanging branches...I feel I need to shorter the tippet to 3' but can't be bothered because I've only got 20 minutes of fishing time left....I get some interest but fail to hook any further trout....still it was worth the stop before I head home tight lines Alex

Another great report. Interesting to hear you used a clear level line. What was it? Was there a special reason for using it this trip?

Cust, Most of last season I used a 10'6" furled leader....I bought 3 x spools of cheap fluorocarbon...I think they cost £3.99 for a 50m spool...I bought 3: 12lb;16lb and 20lb. I guess I am just using them up...I confined the 20lb spool to the dustbin earlier this week as it was too heavy. I've painted them with model paint, permanent ink markers and so on....but I feel more confident in using the clear at the moment 'cause I was getting fed up blanking and needed something to blame...so I blamed the hi viz lines and since I moved to clear I've not blanked yet...so I'll stick with clear....for now...until the inevitable blank....then I'll blame something else are try something new no doubt. tight lines Alex

lol... We have to blame something! I've noticed that when the river is really clear the fish scatter as soon as the hi-vis line sales overhead. I think that's why I'm liking the less intense line I'm currently using. No point even looking at the rivers at the moment because it's hardly stopped raining. Tomorrow is no better.
Long may the none blanking streak continue!

Friday 8 June 2012 - Polton I arrived at the river just after 06:30am...I didn't know what to expect but the river was still low and clear....there was some rain during the night but not enough to spoil the fishing...lucky me...I'll get a couple of hours in then...I head downstream to where I know the fish lie....I start with the clear level line set up with a singly dry fly....loads of fly life...I can hear a few splashes now and again and spot some rises...but not many....no interest in my pale winged olive...I change to a klinkhammer....an hour come and gone and I've only had a couple of offers....I've moved upstream a bit as well....I decide to change to a sakasa kebari fished under an indicator in case there are some takes that I am missing....the indicator dives a few times but each time I fail to connect....I'm now on the bridge pool....5 minutes fishing time left...how time flies when you're enjoying yourself even if your not catching....there's a guy on the bridge watching....I cast upstream and a fish takes...he's on....this guy must think I'm an expert ;D....anyway I manage to land and photograph him ...the guy comes done for a chat...we chat then I head to work...a good start to the day tight lines Alex

Alex.
What a tonic that single fish is, faced with a day of work.

Tuesday 12 June 2012 - Polton I start about 17:30 hrs and walk downstream to a favourite run... there are loads of flies on the water and I can see some rises...it could be a good evenings fishing...after two cast I have a rise to the dry fly...but don't connect....after half an hour I nail one after missing about half a dozen.. I'm working may way upstream and the rises continue...the trout must be hungry after all the rain we've had...another one comes to hand... I'm using the palomar knot on a size 16 dry and got it through the eye and back without any problem....I've just missed one the fly came right out of its mouth and landed up a tree...a couple of tugs and its free...I like this knot I keep moving and I'm now past the bridge and heading for some nice water...I couple of pools up I spot the otter swimming downstream on the other side...it dives and emerges way past me....he doesn't disturb the fishing 'cause another comes to hand I've changed flies to a klinkhammer and get an immediate response. there coming to the fly thick and fast tonight and here's another...this is the biggest of the evening and he gave up a good scrap one more for luck...a couple of cast after I nailed his brother I've caught 8 tonight and missed loads more...very enjoyable tight lines Alex

Thursday 14 June 2012 - Polton
Well it's forecast to rain over the weekend so I'll get a couple of hours in after work while it's still dry and the river is in good nick...I'm on a single size 16 dry fly and working my way up from the bridge pool....they're plenty of olives and mayflies on the water and some rises....a few fish take the fly but I don't connect...this little fella takes..I strike and he's on....I don't need a landing net for this guy but he's welcome all the same.
I'm moving past the runs and pools where I couldn't fail to connect only two night ago....I try a bit further upstream where I've had a lot of success in the past....as I approach from downstream I see a couple of rises at the tail of the pool...magic...I cast my dry over the likely spots....I've had a few splashes at the fly but no hook ups...until now and a nice trout is on...it's about 3/4 lb I guess...it's fighting like mad as you would expect...I'm standing in about 4" of fast running water that tails off from the run I'm fishing...the net's out...the fish sees it and heads downstream....I manage to turn it and it's looking at me with its mouth agape....the current just takes it downstream and before I know it the fly comes loose and fly and furled leader are in the branches of a riverside tree....don't know how many times that has happened to me....I spend about 5 minutes undoing the knot in the furled leader and my fly is in the branches so I tie on another one...back to the fishing again and I'm still in the same position...fish are still rising at the tail, middle and top of the run....after a dozen casts or so I get another take...the fish is similar in size to the last one....and it does exactly the same as the last one and heads down the fast flowing run off at the end of the pool and the inevitable happens...only this time I'm not up a tree....they're educated trout up here...they know how to slip a hook....well mine anyway...I fish on get a few rise...nick a few then it's time to head home.
tight lines
Alex
