Alex It was damn cold last weekend, water was freezing!! I don't blame you for staying in. I meet a couple of guys last weekend, they were out walking and started chatting to my brother and myself. They mentioned trying to get the river stocked again and they implied they were in the precess of organising a meeting with landowners etc. But when i questioned them regarding the meeting and who they were speaking to it was all a bit vague. I said they should leave it well alone as it was a cracking little river and needed no intervention!! I cant understand why people think that stocking is always the answer!! Have you heard anything or know anyone involved? I'd like to get my tuppence worth.... and get involved if possible, obviously!!

Marc, Never heard of that one. Don't think it will ever come to fruition so like you I strongly believe that it should be left as it is. Don't want it spoiled like the Water of Leith was a few years ago.
Tight lines

Alex The WOL was the example I used to discourage the two of them, the water get stock and within hours every man and his dog are out worming, spinning and I've even heard of netting!!! The native fish don't stand a chance against 1-2lb stock fish and the banks get littered etc, rant over!!! I went down again today to Polton and managed three small grayling but I'm convinced these grayling are not the brightest of ladies! I'm certain the third fish I caught was actually the first! It was caught at roughly the same spot and I had a puncture mark only millimetres away from where my hook presently sat and I'm sure it was from my hook earlier! I may be wrong but I would say I was 90% sure. Have you had any similar experiences? The fish are there if not few And far between, but that makes it all the more challenging. Hope to see you down there soon .

Marc, I was down at Polton yesterday morning myself for a couple of hours...didn't touch a thing. ..the water was running steady and clear...so no excuses... nice to get out though I've never had that experience but I guess it's possible if you hit a shoal and it felt secure ... who knows....it's never happened to me 'cause the most grayling I've caught in a single session is 2...you've already beaten my record for the Esk Alex

Saturday21 March 2015 I'll try for the grayling this morning...see if I can beat my record of 2 grayling in one session. I'm using the Tenkara USA Yamame with a two nymph set up one weighted and one unweighted. The river is clear and pretty low for this time of the year. Still it's amazing how the course of the river has changed quite a lot of the pools and runs I was used to fishing last year. After 10 minutes I hook this little beauty... The very next run I'm in again and here he is.... I don't know what's happening today but I'm connecting with lots of fish this morning. At the end of a 2 hour session I have hokked 9 grayling with 6 coming to hand. My best day yet. Tight Lines Alex

Congratulations Alex Looks like you had a cracking morning, and nailing your technique to boot. I've not managed down since I last reported, but intend on getting on the water maybe one night this week if your up for it? I was in Slovenia for a week at the end of April and getting loads of practise with the weighted nymphs, the more I use this style the more I enjoy it. The rivers over there are so clear you could see the fish take you flee. Saturday 19 December 2015 Tried for a few hours for the grayling and managed to land one, lost one and also hooked and lost a feisty ooswbt as it jumped clear out of the water and spat out the hook...the little show off....Still it was a good session and the mild weather and the river running steady and clear was a bonus.

Nice one Leckie. No chance of fishing down here, metres of flood water everywhere. I see the wee speck of pink giving away the deadly fly! Glyn

Saturday 12 March 2016 Well the trout season is almost upon us so I thought I'd go out for a couple of hours to give the grayling one last go. I only managed the one offer but managed to hook and land it okay...and here she is...a nice fish about a pound and a half I reckon. Tight lines guys for the new season. Leckie

Tuesday 11 April 2017 I can't believe its been over a year since my last post ...what have I been playing at! Since the trout season finished last October I reverted back to the tradition fly rod, reel and line for the grayling. I did this because when weighted nymphs get snagged on the bottom as they sometimes do its murder trying to free them fishing with the T rod. Anyways, I'm back on the T rod and have had a couple of short outings with no success although I did see a pair of goosanders on the river today so there must be fish there....somewhere. The river is very low and clear so fishing is pretty hard going at present. I haven't seen one rise yet but its early days. Leckie
