Sunday 1 April 2012 - Dalkeith Country Park
I'm heading for the River South Esk for a change..right at the end of life...where it joins the River Esk...I'll stop off and fish a few runs where the grayling reside in the River North Esk....I'm fishing my usual tactics only this time I have 2 flies under the indicator...both nymph patterns...only the bottom one is weighted....after 10 minutes or so my indicator dips under the surface and I lift into a nice grayling which gives a good account of itself before succumbing to the net...I like fishing for grayling their strong fighters and use the current well which makes then feel bigger when you have them on.
I try a bit further down to my favourite spot by the fallen tree...and I don't believe it...a good rise just 10 yards ahead....I work my way up and I now covering it....goodness me its a grayling and its taken the weighted nymph....its pulling hard and moving upstream...then would you believe it...its off and so is the hook....the knot has come undone again....aargh Never mind I'll pack up now and head for the River South Esk.

Un luckey about another knot slip alex what knot are you using to tie the flys on? But on the Brightside you got some action at least, what fly and size did it take, up the Penicuik end they seem to be taking nymphs tied on a size 16 hook. But good luck for next time buddy.
Tight lines.

Looks like you need to upgrade to a tennis racket if you keep catching fish of this size!

Mike,
I too am catching them on a size 16 nymph (weighted). I posted a photo of the fly on 17 January 2012 under My bug Variant in Fly dressings. This time I was using a loop knot secured with a 3 turn blood knot....but I will be securing it with a 5 turn blood knot in future.

Simon, I'm on the badminton racket this week...I do week's about...since I made 2. I think the squash racket will take fish up to 1 1/2 lbs...then I might struggle. How are you getting on with your tamo Alex

Up date on the Tamo, rejoined the legs again this past weekend and started the sanding process. I'm hoping the join will hold this time with a wood glue.

Monday 2 April 2012 - DCP It's almost 8pm...getting pretty dark...I'll try half a dozen casts before I pack up at my favourite spot...the 'fallen tree' pool. The are a couple of Gosanders in the pool... when they see me they take off...that's all I need...just hope the pool isn't disturbed too much....I'm on my final cast now right at the fallen tree...when would you believe it the line straightens and a fish is on....its a nice trout...what a fight....its got bags of energy ...but slowly it tires and I have it in the net...photo time.... then release it to fight another day. It's been a good evening's fishing....I'm well contented. tight lines Alex

Down by the river for 7:15 am...boy is it cold...only 2 degrees....no fly life visible..and no rises....the river is higher..thank goodness...but clear(ish)....I've got 2 flies on...a size 16 claret weighted nymph on the point and a size 14 partridge and orange tied sakasa kebari style on the dropper. I fished hard until 8:30am without any takes before it was time to head for work.

really enjoying your efforts leckie on this river, its great to read about the good stuff and the frustrating stuff. This is real fishing most of us can relate to, not the stuff you read in the magazines.

Saturday 14 April 2012 – Dalkeith Country Park First cast just before 7am….and it’s cold with a touch of ground frost….so I’m using a weighted nymph on the point and a partridge and orange on the dropper….I fish downstream for an hour then back upstream using the same set up…if I see a rise I will switch to a dry fly but there is not much fly life at the moment with the temperature so low….after another hour I end up back at the pool I started…I have had no contact or seen any rises….then at the top of the pool I see a distinctive grayling rise…I cover it a few times with the nymph and P&O but the fish shows no interest in my offering…..it’s now time to head home. Dalkeith CP 24th April. 2.30 until 4.00pm Headed down to the North Esk today Dalkeith Country Park. Fished from below the bridge down towards the junction of the North and South Esk for about two and half hours. Set up using a single PTN size 14 and fished across and down the pools and runs noticed a few hatches of olives but no signs of rises. The temperture was around 10 degrees. It was warm in the sun put no sign of any fish moving. After about an hour I changed over to a Partridge and orange size 14 still no joy.. I have fished this river now four times however no joy.. Leckie has had some great sport ( Grayling, WBT) on this river however I think you need to put in the time and get to know the river .. I'm not giving up but I may need a master class session from leckie... I think it needs to warm up a bit to get the fish moving Tight lines Buglife
