It was my copper bead head Takayama Sakasa Kebari (the one I was using on the Ogwen). I might be able to get down there on Tuesday if you fancy a look?

Great picture Louis, that fallen tree looks like a very promising spot. I've looked for info about the Bradley and Caergwrle stretches on the Warrington website, but I haven't seen any details. Are there any maps showing the limits? I think I remember Simon saying positive things about this beat too. Any grayling there?

Hi DBL. The lower limits for Caergwrle are the footbridge over the river at the railway station with fishing then upto the road bridge, about 3/4 mile and yes there are good grayling in this beat.
Simon.

Thanks Simon, looking at Google Earth it looks quite a dense canopy. Similar to Louis' Bradley picture, but does the Bradley beat belong to another club?

A long time since my last fishing post, I'm suffering from a damaged right shoulder, my fishing arm. I'm off to see a specialist in a weeks time so I hope they will be able to sort it out? Anyway I managed a short fish yesterday on the lower Alyn with one of the new tapered leaders loaned to me by Louis to try out. In the evening light the bright green was very easy to see unless you cast into the setting sun, I found the 4.5mt length fine until it came close to you, striking proved very difficult, so on a small river like the Alyn a short version the length of the rod would be ideal. But if I get a chance the leader will be great on the wide Dee. The turn over of the fly is very impressive handling weighted and unweighted fly with no problems. With the river very low the fishing was not the best but Grayling up to 2lb came to the net. While fishing I started to hear a chewing sound coming from the other bank, a steep bank with tall grass at the waters edge, trying to narrow down where the sound was coming from a tall stem of grass was toppled and pulled back! I knew what I was seeing, it was a water vole feeding this was the first vole that I had seen on the Alyn for nearly 20 years. I spent the next 30min just watching, when he move I check the area where he had been, this was his feeding station, before we left Sonia wanted to se this as well. With all the mink on the river we were amazed that this vole was fighting back, I'm hoping to try and get some film of him later.
Simon.

Bradley: hi dbl - this stretch belongs to the Bradley club which can be joined for about £25 a year. A lot of interesting water but also lots of dogs and old ladies. Weekdays are best to avoid these.

Thanks for the info on those beats, Simon and Orangeotter. I haven't got up as far as the Alyn yet, but I hope to over the winter, when the Ceiriog is out of season. I'll start using my Warrington membership!

just returned from the first trip of the new season which opened on 3rd, reasonably flushed with success. River at a perfect height and colour, a trickle of olives, a few risers and the smell of wild garlic already. The tally was only 2 trout and 2 grayling, all modestly sized but this was Heaven after a long Winter on the Dee. Strange isn't it - only used a nymph all winter on the main river but as soon as I fish the Alyn, on goes the favourite GRHE sakasa kebari, just felt like the thing to do and all fish fell to it. I did quite well considering that others had already fished the beat this morning so 'Tenkara rules OK'
A few warm days and the Alyn will pick up nicely.

Hello Orangeotter, Encouraging to read such a report. You had a great day. Still trying to get out myself. According to the EA reports the Ribble is always high?? (When it's working that is). But some great days to come, have a great season. Ian.

Thanks Ian, and the same to you. I do hope to fish the Ribble this year, probably at Mitton - maybe we can meet up sometime.
Tight lines, Louis

key of the door......
Hadn't fished the Bradley beat for a few weeks so slipped out today for a short session. Height 0.32, weather good so looked forward to a good time. Loads of swimming dogs dampened the enthusiasm a bit but fished regardless. Quickly catching a couple where Rover had just vacated so cheered up, but moved up to less canine friendly area. A nice trickle of olives and even a few mayfly plus rising fish really cheereed me up and the bottom line is that in just over 2.5 hours I caught 21 and dropped a few. 12 fell to the ever trusty GRHE SK but s16 and the rest on my dry Western Olive. Mainly in the usual 6-8" range, there were 2x11" and a lovely 13" wildy to finish off from a seemingly impossible spot under a branch - gives you a warm glow when it works out well first cast.
Things would seem to be warming up now so good luck to everyone.
