Been hearing a few reports of otters on the alyn from locals. I am pleased to see otters on the river and happy to catch a few less fish sharing the river with otters. In any case recent dietary studies seem to indicate that bullhead and stone loach make up majority of their diet.

Hi Louis, Any sign of otter around Bradley? I noticed prints below Ithells Bridge on Saturday, first time I have seen them that low down. I believe it is now a serious Alyn predator... Peter Hi Peter,
I have seen otters on the Bradley stretch. I saw two a couple of years ago at the top part of the club's water. Lovely to see them playing and totally oblivious to my presence. Despite fishing up there quite a bit last summer, I've not seen any evidence of them since.
Still plenty of trout and grayling there last year, so they have either moved on or are having very little impact.
Cheers,
Dyfan

It’s been a fairly good week off work, just a couple of non fishing days due to duties around the house. We’ve had one trip to the Dee which became interesting as the wind kept increasing to what eventually felt like a gale, as it increased some fish just started to rise which turned out to be Grayling, 3 were caught at the back end of the pipe pool on a Ducks Dun given to me earlier in the week by Louis. In the end the wind just got to bad and we had to leave. The Alyn this week has produced on all trips, with the water still very cold and very few insects hatching the fish all seem to be hard on the bottom in the deeper slower water. Most fish were Grayling except for yesterday, Sonia and I went to Worm’s wood to fish to get out of the wind instead of using a GRHE I used a small miracle nymph which tempted two small wild brownies. There were insects popping off but as yet no interest in them. The new TenkaraUSA rods are working well and they are starting to become the rods of choice for both of us. Simon

Good recce Simon and Sonia. The water looks lovely with what appears a nice depth in places. No need for the chest waders with the nice shallow banks either. Dare I say it but foam indicator weather?

Sunday 6th April. An early morning call from Ian “Copper Nymph” asking if I could guide him around the new Caergwrle waters that Sonia and I visited a few weeks ago. With the weather much better than the last time we made our way to the river. Parking and access is one of the best for waters I know. No waders today as I only intended to take some photos but just in case my Tenkara rod was placed in my back pocket. Walking upstream from the lower limit we had a chat to a fellow angler spinning for trout, leaving him on his trip downstream we arrived at the top limit where Ian fished a nice very fishy looking run. Using his new Tenkara USA rod he was into a good OFS Grayling very quickly which took a Pheasant tail, well we were not certain that Grayling were this far up the Alyn, but they are, good news! Wandering downstream I crossed the river while Ian plundered another run taking a few good trout. I had a fish in an easy run which rewarded me with two trout, the second giving a very good account for itself, my best trout so far this season, this was taken just after this run had been fish through with a spinner. Speaking later to the spinning angler who had heard of Tenkara and after trying out my rod I have another converted angler. If we all keep picking away we’ll convert them all. Simon.

That's a handsome piece of water Simon, well above the Bradley stretch. You're going to be spoilt for choice !
Good fishing result all...

nice water Simon, I dropped out of Warrington anglers this year - a tinge of regret about it now with that new Alyn stretch available...! My latest update from a visit to the Alyn as follows: Several plans to go fly-fishing with the boys were scuppered but not yesterday. This time it was Adam that was interested in fishing and we caught a wee sea trout smolt on the 11 foot Iwana I bought last year in a brilliant Tenkara USA sale. Moreover, it was the first fish to the rod and in a pool that I have never ever caught anything in. A day of firsts. Just goes to show that if you work a pool for long enough (2 hours) no amount of rocks and logs being thrown in can scupper your chance!!! Adam is only 3 but managed the rod great, another good example of the advantages of a Tenkara rod in introducing fly fishing to young children. Photos of the trip posted at outdoorswithdad.orgThe boys were ready to leave just as the afternoon hatch of large dark olive got underway and I could see two decent fish moving nearby as we headed back up the fields to the car. Whomever first said parenting means making personal sacrifices must have been a fisherman!

Sunday 20thApril. Rain in the morning kept us around the house until around 1300. The weather was overcast, still with a threat of rain. We arrived at the lower Alyn at Ithells farm, Sonia went downstream starting with nymphs until fish stared to rise then changed to dry fly. No trout for her today but again many BIG Grayling. I fish the run alongside the farm with a GRHE fished deep to start, very few fish were caught, after talking to the Bailiff yesterday I started fishing the nymph very close to the surface, immediately there was a change in my luck it seemed like every cast either produce a bite or a fish many being Big Grayling. Then in a run that had already produce some good fish I saw a flash and hooked into a big wild Brown trout my best on the Alyn, at around 2lb I had a big smile on my face. The river is improving all the time and it’s still early spring, roll on the summer months! Then the rain came just as we returned to the car, perfect timing. For any Alyn fisher fish shallow than you normally would it surprised me today! Simon & Sonia.

Had a few hours on the Bradley stretch yesterday afternoon. Despite the rain, I had a really good session! Very pleased to see grayling of all sizes and plenty of wild brownies (I only found one stocked fish as far as I could tell). Lost my biggest fish (as usual!). Because the water had a greenish tinge, I was forced to use my very bright orange TUSA line instead of my usual yamatoyo. This didn't seem to make any difference to the fish this time.

That's really good news Dyfan, thought it would have been too low although the gauge seems to be rising slowly. I still haven't caught a grayling there yet but will get out in a day or two. What fly did the business ?.
Interesting about the orange line, I'll have to give it a whirl as the Yamotoya is certainly hard to see in some lights.
