Having had the 12' Iwana I'm looking for a new rod. The more online tenkara rod reviews I read, the more I realise how much seems to depend on the intended tactics used, i.e. dries, heavy nymphs, big rivers, etc.
So I'm after some advice, not so much for a model of rod but for its profile.
I plan to fish my local streams which are mainly 6' - 12' wide using mainly kebari semi-wet rather than dries.
What rod characteristics should I be looking for? I'm presuming softer in the tip to help with sasoi. I'm thinking a 5:5 would be too soft? Should I be working with lighter level lines? Again I'm guessing so. Looking at footage of those japanese legends their rods seem pretty crisp.
Thanks in advance

If you have room overhead, it sounds like you want a similar action to your Iwana. If you can get to the BFFI in February, I believe Discover Tenkara will be there. I'm sure they will have rods to try.

David is right. You need to cast some rods. Not many options to do that unfortunately unless you visit the tackle shops so BFFI is the way to go. The boys will advise you as well. Good luck

Thanks you two. After a lot of pouring over reviews and footage I plumbed for a Try Tenkara 360.
I'm still intrigued by what kind of rod profile is considered best specifically for the wet fly techniques. Maybe there isn't one, but I was thinking how on old cane fly rods I've seen that came with two tip sections, the wet fly tip would be finer and softer. I was thinking that in the context of tenkara that might help to soften up any pulsed movement that might be given to the wet fly subsurface.

If you not already parted with cash do consider a zoom rod of some kind. Gives you a lot of versatility and saves buying several rods. DT have the Hakusan as a useful tool. I fished with one for a week in Japan and it was a sweet rod. Good luck.

If you are interested in manipulation, Paul of Discover Tenkara recently released a video about it. Extracts on the second Tenkara In Focus series on You Tube. Look at this page on their blog. www.discovertenkara.co.uk/blog/blog-35.html
