Hello all.I have been fishing sakasa kebari patterns fairly often from the start of this season.I mainly use partridge or hen pheasant for the hackle.Anyway wondering how many hackle turns on a kebari others feel work best (sparse vs bushy).I was fishing them bushy 3 turns of hackle. But recently started trying them with as little as one or 11/2 turns.I am sure the sparser ones work better fished up down pulsed or whatever.(What gives)I thought sakasa kebari flies where generally denser hackled than North country soft-hackles.Cheers

I find it best to make a selection with various densities and you can match them to the water you are about to fish. For manipulation, then perhaps a little more hackle suits as it helps the fly to grip, the surface film better. Don't get too sidetracked in tying everything with a reverse hackle. Having been to Japan and watched experts fishing they tend to tie traditional or straight hackle styles. It is a misconception that all Japanese flies are tied Sakasa style. I find it helps sometimes to support the front soft hackle with a cock hackle. That helps with manipulation. Hope this helps. Glyn
