Well I went out on my local river today with lure gear, lure gear is much more suited to the lakes and rivers like the Dwyfor or Glaslyn though, on the Artro it just doesnt seem to get decent enough results. To make a better presentation I really think Tenkara or Keiryu is the way to go, heres a few pictures; I really do not have a massive budget so would really appreciate your help. Looking at this, what length rod should I choose and what kind of flies? Level line? tippet diameter etc? I have only cast a fly once or twice in my life and pretty much sucked at it, however I will just practice be it in my garden or on the river. The fish are mostly small, though on high levels some beasts do run, I probably will not be targeting those, just the resident brownies. two months of the season left and I'm keen to get some hours in so can you please advise me on some kit suitable for this water? Many thanks

fantastic river goddard and one I'm planning to visit. It looks fairly open so no problem with a 12ft rod. However, I would always recommend what we call a 'zoom rod', one that will accomodate 3 lengths. An excellent rod is the Strooan by Esoteric which will sit at 12ft,10ft 8" and 9ft 4" - really useful and will cover all your requirements, even on other rivers. You can see it on www.esoterictackle.co.uk ( i have no commercial interest) If we meet as planned you can try mine. The Artro is perfect !

Thanks very much for the recommendation, that rod is a little out of my range just now but I shall see what I can do. We have so many good rivers here to be honest, the Dwyfor, Glaslyn, Artro, Mawddach, Dyrydd and all the tributaries, you should come over lol. I really hope to meet and will see when I can get some more time off

Welcome to the forum goddard. You will enjoy Tenkara, a great way to fish. Good advice from orangeotter. Can I recommend a day with the Discover Tenkara lads. They will put you right on ALL you need to know. That way you can save so much time by doing it right in the first place. I have been there. You will not be disappointed. Also there is so much information in this forum. Have a look at the thread, started on 14th June last year in the General section, Tenkara questions and tips. The thread "tenkara dry fly fishing query". There are so many answers contained in that thread. Good Luck.
