I've been safely back in York for a few days having spent a fabulous nine days fishing in Devon. This is the 3rd successive year I have spent a week or so in beautiful Devon county and this year was the best yet. I won't bore you with a blow by blow but 9 days no blanks and some quite varied water. Rivers fished include the Taw, Yeo, Teign, East Okement, Tavvy and several Dartmouth streams (I brought 3 sets of waders with me, for biosecurity reasons). I stayed in the Fox & Hounds, Chumleigh for 3 days and a cottage in Lapford for the remainder of my visit, both places were great. The Fox and Hounds caters for us fly anglers with quite a few miles of the River Taw, room was good, food was good and chatting with the other anglers was rewarding.
Incidentally I got a good deal from the Hotel's web page, worth planning ahead.
I need to mention a couple of folks. Firstly Howard Colmer who guided me on my second day as my prize from this year's Wild Trout Trust Auction. Howard certainly knows his stuff and put me onto plenty of fish and one especially nice Brownie. I look forward to returning the compliment when he is UP North and we can find a few fine Grayling on some of Yorkshire's post industrial rivers. Then a big thank you to Pete Tyjas (of Eat Sleep Fish fame) for his help and recommendations to make sure I got the best out of my time in Devon.
Here are a few photos of the trip:
First fish photo is one I caught with Howard
Second is from Dartmoor stream
Third is the last fish I caught on my visit to Devon, I caught it twice in 30 minutes with the same nymph!
I fished with various T Rods on all the rivers except the Tavvy where I resorted to my 9ft 5 wt Hardy.
Apologies to readers of the Devon Rivers Forum who may see similarities to the above and what I posted on that forum.
