Ive only had one go at the tenkara rod and had my best trout/grayling session on the Ribble ever ( absolutely loved it), however I was making it up as I went along.
My level line was too long, is there a general rule of thumb for the length of level line and length of rod?
Also what the best method of straightening level line, mine was coiled like a spring!

Hello Kickingk, Welcome to the forum. I also fish the Ribble. Glad you made good use of your Tenkara rod. Great way to fish. I am, like you, still learning about tenkara. There is plenty of advice on the forum but as a general rule of thumb your level line should be about the length of your rod not including your tippet. Before attaching your line to the rod get it warm by pulling it through your hands and slightly stretching it. I take it you are using level fluorocarbon? There has been much written about lines on the forum. Hope it helps. Enjoy your season. Ian.

Just for interest have a look at "Tenkara questions and Tips" section under the General heading. The thread, Tenkara dry fly fishing query, started on 14th June, 2015. There are some very helpful tips and some great video clips that will set you up for the season. Good Luck, Ian.

Hi
I agree that the length of thee line should be about the same length as the rod initially. As you get more experienced lengthening the line is possible to cover other fishing situations. On a larger river I would use at least a 4 to 6 metre line.
I hope that this has not confused you too much.
Richard

Hello Kickingk, I wouldn't fish a line much longer than my rod to begin with until you've perfected the cast, fly landing first. If you want to nymph for grayling/trout then use a much shorter line. I highly recommend you signing up to the discover tenkara free tutorials. www.discovertenkara.co.uk/Paul

Thanks for the info everyone, I will shorten it next time. Got the emails Paul and great they are too, just having a slight problem with my email account at the minute. I will also try warming up the level line to straighten it a bit. Thanks again
