Hello Folks,
I was wondering if I could get some thoughts on an idea I have: I'm obviously a big fan of Tenkara otherwise I wouldn't be here but another fun outdoor pursuit is geocaching (in a nutshell, finding hidden treasures and logbooks scattered about the country - anyone remember letter boxing?).
Anyway, I'd like to combine the two so my idea is to start a fly box with just a few useful patterns in it and send it on its way throughout the season all around the country, allowing people to use the box, add to it ideally and pass it on/hide it somewhere for the next person.
Now, true geocaching involves hiding the "cache" somewhere and posting some online clues as to its whereabouts (mainly so the general public cannot find it too easily). Once found, a logbook is filled in and the cache either replaced or taken somewhere else with a new set of location clues posted for the next person.
An alternative, and one which Daniel from Tenkara USA has adopted, is sending a box to someone to "host" for a couple of weeks before that person then sending it on to the next in the queue and so on.
This all may seem pointless but it's kind of an experiment and much of the value and interest comes from where the box ends up and what people record in the log.
So, thoughts anyone? Mainly, should it be a hidden cache or should it be sent to people to host? Oh, and would you take part?!
Thanks,
Christian

Hi Christian I think it's a fab idea. I've followed a few of these, Daniel from Tenkara USA as you mention, from other forums. I'd plump for a hosted fly box rather than a hidden cache. Hopefully, this will get off the ground. Any guidelines regarding fly patterns? Kebari patterns only sourced from Yoshikazu Fujioka's lovely website Trout and Seasons of The Mountain Village perhaps, or an anything goes approach, that would be fun. Happy fishing Phil

Hi Phil,
Firstly, thanks for the welcome on the other page (it was a Slovenian brown by the way).
Secondly, thanks for the thoughts on the fly box - certainly, a hosted box would be easier to set up than a cached one. I also checked out the link - incredible flies! Given me some inspiration!
I thought maybe an anything goes approach to the box just so that any level of fly tyer could contribute. What do you think about length of time for hosting? A couple of weeks per person?

It's a wonderful site indeed. I'd suggest a fortnight for the hosting and an anything goes approach, that would make for a pretting interesting box by the end of the season. Hopefully, others on the forum will get in on this too Regards Phil ><((((*>
