Hi to all, just about to embark on my first Tenkara session next week on the River Guash in Rutland. The Guash is narrow river in places with lots of bank side cover and can only be fished from the bank, the river holds a good head of wild brownies and some grayling. Any advice would be appreciated, the Tenkara rod I have purchased is an 11ft 7:3 Masu.

Whilst I am not familiar with that rod Trev I guess the length would be ok to help to clear the bankside vegetation. Not sure if you have overhead cover as well as that can often dictate rod length. Perhaps a net with a longer handle would help if you cannot get into the water. Only one way to find out is to get out there and have a go. You might start with a line length just shorter than your rod and say 4 feet of tippet and see how you go. Good luck and enjoy it. Tread carefully and slowly as you are going to be well above the fish and quite visible. Glyn

Hi thanks for the advice, had my first trip yesterday to try my new gear, which was fine, used a parrallel leader of 8ft with 3ft Tippett, turned over nicely with a small dry and nymph. The stretch I fished has some overhead cover, but I found the 11ft rod fine if I took care of the branches. I didn't catch, but enjoyed trying out the new method of fishing, holding the leader off the water took some getting used too. We have a couple of stretches of the Welland which are a bit wider, so going to give that a try on Thursday. The rod I have came from Tenkara Centre UK.

Finally managed a couple of hours on the Welland today as our season ends on the 29th Oct, caught first Tenkara fish a brownie of about a pound on a small PT nymph, switched to a French nymph and hooked a monster, wasn't convinced that fine tip would hold, seemed very strange not being able to let the fish run, but after a fantastic fight landed a brownie of 4lb, what was almost as pleasing was that it was a fly I tied last week on the end of a level leader I had made up myself. I think you can say I am well and truly hooked on Tenkara, roll on the WTT grayling weekend next week.

Wow - great going Trev; what a debut! I think that is the biggest fish I've heard of on a Masu

That is a whopper of a trout and you did ever so well to land it. Now, where do you go from here having had a fish of that size? You will know that you can get tons of fun out of the progeny of that big one!! Tremendous Glyn
