If you can't catch fish on the killer bug don't lose heart, it's taken me 3yrs of virtual complete failure before it started working for me. I knew I was missing something so I've been coming back to it off and on since I started tenkara fishing 3yrs ago.
I think my original bugs were too heavy with lead wire and I just didn't enjoy fishing them, I went to what I think is pretty close to the original tying but with oyster spin drift 290 ( see link ) and this seems to work really well for me. Very little weight, easy to cast and it finds the bottom okay on my river with a little help from the river currents. I find it mesmerizing watching my level line for any tweaks or stops. So easy to tie too it almost feels like cheating.

A terrific pattern. I have not tried the Spindrift version yet but the original 477 is pretty deadly. I add a bit of CDC as well like the Killer Kebari pattern and that also works really well. Yes, you are right, sometimes too much weight can be counter productive at times. Dear old Davy McPhail is the main man when it comes to fly tying footage. Glyn
