With the start of the trout season last weekend on the Disley & New Mills Angling Club waters, I ventured out with the Tenkara rod onto the River Goyt and its’ tributary the River Sett. The Goyt rises on the moors above Buxton and meets the River Tame in Stockport to form the River Mersey. Flowing through New Mills, the river is distinctly urban in character where it is channelled through the once industrialised gorge known as The Torrs. On Saturday I fished up from Hague Bar Meadow to Mousley Bottom below the town where the feel of the river is much more rural. Sunshine filtering through the trees made for a pleasant few hours wading with abundant bird life but not a fish to be had by me I’m afraid. Resigning myself to blanking on opening day, I was consoled to meet a feilow club angler who had blanked on the beat above the town. “Give it a couple more weeks” was his advice. Hope springs eternal, Sunday saw me on the Dyehouse Lane beat on the River Sett. This is a small stream flowing through a post-industrial landscape but it yielded remarkably large wild brown trout last season. A much colder morning but all the usual spots were barren. Perhaps I need to be more stealthy, change fly – or wait a couple more weeks!
