First day on the river this year, Esoteric rod, TUSA Kebari in olive green, just about the only fly I use. Small wbt ( 6in ?) after about 15 mins, in the bubbles down stream of the entrance to the pool. Moved on after 10 minutes as I have never caught 2 fish on the same day from this pool. Down to coopers bridge, by Coopers scrap yard , across from the National Grid site ! the joys of urban rivers..... a small grayling on the same fly. A cold but good morning...

Don't want to be a party pooper, but we are currently in the short time of year between 15th March and 24th March when both trout and grayling are out of season in South Yorkshire...Need to take care on those local byelaws!

Strange how certain areas have different seasons. Why can one date not apply to the whole of the British Isles?

Strange how certain areas have different seasons. Why can one date not apply to the whole of the British Isles? Yes, I genuinely dont know what purpose it serves! Single set of dates would be much better.

Good idea springerman. Would also stop people trying to suck any pleasure you might have out of life.
While Trout & Salmon magazine extol the joy of the new Trout season, March edition, including an article by the president or the Wild Trout Trust maybe it's time for the trust to give definitive date. Or should single fly Tenkara be discouraged.

Paul G, good point. Where can i get a copy of the Sheffield Council bylaws regarding fishing on urban rivers within the city ? Or did you mean Environment Agency guidelines ?

Thanks for that Paul. Do you know the reason for this 9 day break ?

Its just what has historically been judged to be protective of the breeding seasons of all coarse fish (which from a breeding season point of view includes grayling) and also trout (which can breed anytime from October to February depending on conditions).
I suspect that the local differences in dates reflect local decisions that were taken by previous (regional/local) river authorities before nationalisation (first to the National Rivers Authority which ultimately became the Environment Agency). Some of the differences might also be an attempt to account for local characteristics in breeding habits and weather conditions.

A spokesperson (y) at last years roadford South west fly fair(2014) said the E A were looking at unification of dates. Still looking? Not really surprised !
