Having finished reading The North Country Fly by Robert L Smith, which I picked up at the book launch during the BFFI, I have been looking around for another good read. This book, by the way, has a reference to Tenkara when discussing 18th century fly fishing styles on the River Wharfe.
I have enjoyed reading all of Lou Stevens books on fishing small streams this winter, so I opted for an American perspective and chose Trout from Small Streams by Dave Hughes which was first published in 2002 and, as you probably know, has had many good reviews.
The 2014 2nd edition that I bought has over 40% more pages to accommodate the 100 or so new colour photographs and two new chapters, including an extensive one devoted to Tenkara. In these 21 pages, Dave Hughes gives his own views and experience of fishing Tenkara in North America for almost thirty years.
In line with the rest of the book, his anecdotal style gives insights into the equipment and techniques that he employs when fishing Tenkara on small streams. A significant episode in the story is a fishing trip to Oregon with Daniel Galhardo.
I wouldn’t buy the book just for this chapter on Tenkara but whole publication is very readable, well presented and very informative. Despite the title, the focus is on equipment and techniques. Apparently there is more about the trout themselves in his other book Reading Trout Water – perhaps one for next winter.

Nice review Alan, I've not had chance to look at trout from small streams yet, but I'm enjoying North Country flies just now in the odd spare moment :-)

I downloaded a sample of "Reading Trout Water" and was so impressed I bought the company, no book.
Will post a verdict when it's been delivered and then absorbed.
