I've resisted for so long - been strongly skeptical even - but recently just started to think seriously about giving tenkara a bash. Too many experienced and well-respected anglers are extolling the virtues now to make ignoring it a real option.......so I got myself a TCUK rod (actually, was lucky enough to win one in a comp), and have recently set about gathering the bits and bobs I need to make a start. I've fished tenkara only once so far and was a mess of fingers and thumbs; but even then I managed to secure a few small rising grayling with an ease that would have eluded me using 'normal' gear. The potential is clear.
My name is Matt and I hail from Lancashire, and do my fishing there and all across the north of England with occasional forays north of the border. I look forward to learning off you more experienced tenkara fishers in the coming months.
Thanks!

Welcome Matt. I am sure you will find Tenkara a great addition to your armoury and have lots of fun with it. Plenty of useful stuff in these pages from a number of good practitioners and, of course, do enjoy your fishing. Tight lines Glyn

Welcome to the forum Matt. Tenkara is not the universal answer to catching trout & grayling but there are many situations where it beats Western gear by a mile. There's lots to learn even though basically it is a simple method. There are lots of subtleties of technique. You'll get a lot of info from the forum. I'm originally from your neck of the woods (Preston, Blackpool & Lytham St. Annes) but am now a naturalised citizen of East Yorkshire. If you fancy getting together sometime I'd be happy to show you the ways that I fish with Tenkara gear (mainly dry fly with nymphing.bugging in winter & occasional traditional Tenkara with Sakasa Kebari flies. Meanwhile enjoy the learning curve.

Was over your neck in the summer with the family for a few days - no fishing I'm afraid, although I have fond memories as a young lad of the carnage that is Pickering Trout Farm! I'll try to take you up on that offer sometime - maybe meet up in Teesdale one day? Love it up there and fished the Cow plenty times but yet to fish the river..... Best Matt

I used to fish the canal at Catforth & have a friend Geoff Richmond who lived there but now lives in Ingol. I used to catch roach, chub & trout from Barton Brook. The upper Tees would be a great place to meet up, perfect Tenkara water. I look forward to it. Dave

Hello Matt, Welcome to the forum. I have not contributed for a while as I have not been on the river. I closely follow you on your own site (one of the best). I live Formby but fish the Wyre, Hodder and Ribble. Like everyone has said...you will enjoy Tenkara. Great way to fish. Good Luck. Ian.

I'm actually itching to give it a go, but most of my grayling fishing at present is being done in a large-ish Scottish river. It's not really the method to use!

Don't discount Tenkara on big rivers Matt. As long as you can wade near enough to the fish it will work excellently as the presentation can't be beaten.
