I've found a variant of the Utah Killer Bug to be very effective for both trout & grayling. Tying of my version is 2 layers of fine lead wire (top layer shorter than the bottom one), overlaid with fluorescent pink or orange floss (also used as tying thread) & an over body of Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift wool (Oyster colour).

Great looking bugs reminiscent of the classic grayling bug. I will try and make them. Richard

After reading about the killer bug,and thinking it would be easy for me to tie(!) I bought some of this beautiful wool from Jamieson's about a year ago. I had previously tied the Sawyer bug, but the easy availability of this wool seemed a good idea and the colours in the Oyster blend are very subtle. So far the fish haven't shared my view of its attractiveness, but the pink and orange underbodies, peeking at the head and tail, look to be great triggers. Can I ask on what hook you usually tie them?

The hooksI generally use are FISH ON River Academy Curved (standard gauge) sizes 10 to 14 (more like 12 to 16s). They are reasonably priced, very sharp, strong & barbless. Available via the net from www.fishonproductions.co.uk

Looking at these bugs have inspired me to add another variant. A collar of hare's ear. Attachments:

Thanks for the info Daves, especially on size. I've heard good things about FISH ON hooks before from OrangeOtter. I'm ordering some at the moment, bearing in mind your notes on size.

The FISH ON hooks are all very good. I use the fine wire curved hooks for some of my Shuttlecocks.

I would also give a thumbs up for the Fish on hooks and use the 'wet and dry' plus the ' compound curved 'models. Good and strong and great service and delivery. The killer bug plus variants takes some beating in my book. I had some super fish last week on the Kennet on the bug and the fish on hooks. Happy tying Glyn

The orange variant worked well on the Derbyshire Dove last friday, before the Grayling Soc. Symposium & on the Derbyshire Derwent on the sunday after.

Yet again the orange Utah Killer Bug (with lead underbody & fluorescent orange floss below the wool & used as tying thread) has proved itself on grayling. Last Sunday afternoon I had 7 grayling in an hour from Driffield Beck with the best fish weighing 1lb 12oz, 1lb 14oz, 1lb 15 oz, 2lb 7oz & 2lb 14oz (plus 2 other grayling lost & 3 OOS trout).
