At the end of the video there is also a link to quite a detailed article on the subject which compares and contrasts to other alternatives (including considerations of efficacy).

Excellent video & article. There is no doubting that even a light level line landing on the water is enough to spook fish in certain situations (I've watched it happen). As you note, anything hitting the water attracts the fish's attention & if it is the only fly then the fish sees potential food without being distracted by anything else. The essence of the Italian Casting Style is the same, to land the fly first, but with that style the leader & line eventually land & do sometimes spook the fish.

On a recent trip to the Derwent the water was so low the fish were ultra spooky. Anything less than a perfect cast and presentation and the fish headed for cover. Fly first presentation with the line off the water is key.
Great video and article about the importance. Having a rod with a fast recovery is a great aid to the fly first presentation. A rod where the tip keeps bouncing after the cast makes it much harder.
