Hi All,
I have an ageing 12' T-rod I got off ebay.fr about 3 years ago.. It came from China of all places... Though in fact I have only used it in the last 18months, this cheap rod wasn't the bargain I had hoped. Though it has done me well, I am now looking for something more up market and suitable for someone only a little better than a novice. Any thoughts? I have up to about 150euros to spend, inc delivery..
Cheers
Bob

In that price range, I think you'll find that most tenkara rods will be from China. See if you can find a Nissin Super Tenkara Pro Square, which is probably the least expensive tenkara rod actually made in Japan. It will do well for someone a little better than a novice, and will have a light weight and nice action the Chinese rods are unlikely to equal. I'd recommend the 7:3 for an all-around rod, 6:4 if you prefer a softer rod. If none of the UK dealers can get you one, send me a PM.

Hi Bob, Much depends on what kind of fishing you want the new Tenkara rod for. If you want a super-light rod for fish up to about 14" it's worth looking at the Tenkara Times TRY series which are really nice rods at a very reasonable price. If weight is less important & you want a long rod capable of coping with bigger fish then The Esoteric 410 6:4 or 7:3 or the Tenkara Times Motive 390 or the Tenkara Centre UK's 13' Hamon 7:3 are rods I've used & like. For an 'all round rod' the new Tenkara USA Sato handles really well but is a bit more than your price range at £130, but you get 3 rod lengths in 1. I've not tried the Nissin rod recommended by Chris but he must have tested more rods than anyone else & I do have a NIssin Pro Spec 2 Way 7:3 that is a gem of a rod.
Hope this is of help.

My go-to rod at the moment isn't really a Tenkara rod it's a Keiryu rod the Daiwa 43MF it's got plenty of back bone if you hook into something big but doesn't feel over gunned on a 8oz trout. It feels very light and crisp on both lengths 12.5ft and 14ft. I bought mine from Chris at Tenkarabum it came out at £122 with shipping to the UK. However I was lucky and customs didn't get hold of it, if they do you need to add VAT plus a £10 handling fee. I really like not having a cork handle but that's personal preference. Two Tenkara rods that I still really like are the Try 390 and the good old faithful Iwana. One other thing customer support is important when choosing a rod and you'll get that with all the rods mentioned in this thread. www.tenkarabum.com/daiwa-kiyose-43mf.html
